Religious Undertones in Nick Cave's Lyrics

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá náboženské podbarvení textů písní Nicka Cavea. Dříve než jsou vybrané texty podrobeny samotné analýze, přináší práce neortodoxní pohled na náboženství v kontextu současného umění, hudby nevyjímaje. Dále se zaměřuje na Caveův osobní život a jeho hudební kariéru s ohledem na náboženství. Práce také zachycuje vliv Bible, Starého i Nového zákona, na Caveovu hudební tvorbu. Následně vysvětluje antagonistický postoj Nicka Cavea k institucionalizovanému náboženství i jeho osobitou víru v možnou existenci Boha a s ní související koncept tvůrčí imaginace. Čtenář je také seznámen s typickými rysy Caveových hudebních textů, kde se mistrně snoubí duchovno se světskou tématikou. Za účelem analýzy písňových textů orientované zejména na interpretaci jejich náboženského charakteru je použita metoda „close reading“. Pozornost se tedy upíná zejména k rozličným náboženským metaforám, symbolům či biblickým odkazům, které hojně prostupují texty písní Nicka Cavea.

Abstract:

This dissertation explores religious undertones in the lyrics of Nick Cave. Prior to the analysis of selected lyrics, it introduces an unorthodox perspective on religion within the realm of contemporary art, including music. Furthermore, it focuses on Cave’s private life and his music career with respect to religion. The dissertation also attempts to portray the impact of the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments, on his music oeuvre. Subsequently, it explicates Cave’s antagonistic attitude towards institutionalised religion, his idiosyncratic belief in the potential existence of God and the relating concept of creative imagination. Moreover, the reader is presented with typical features of Cave’s lyrics, where the sacred is masterfully interlaced with the profane. Regarding the subsequent analysis, the method of close reading is applied to Cave’s lyrics in order to interpret their religious undertones. Therefore, attention is paid especially to various religious metaphors, symbols, biblical references and thoughts largely pervading the lyrics.
