American Inspirations: The Life and Work of Jan Novák, Composer

Abstract:

Ve své práci se autor zabývá souvislostmi mezi tvorbou a pohnutým životním osudem skladatele Jana Nováka. Poukazuje na vliv studijního pobytu v Americe a setkání s Bohuslavem Martinů na celé jeho pozdější dílo. V kapitole Období 1948–1968 objasňuje důvody, které vedly Jana Nováka i s celou rodinou k nevyhnutelné emigraci, v následujících kapitolách hodnotí v kontextu doby a kulturně politického vývoje vznik nových kompozic a možnosti uplatnění se v exilu. Vše je doloženo ukázkami korespondence a články z dobového tisku. Zvláštní pozornost věnuje autor vztahu Jana Nováka a latiny, která významně ovlivnila vznik a charakter téměř všech vokálních a vokálně-instrumentálních kompozic, a také sborovým skladbám a okolnostem jejich vzniku. V závěru práce jsou přiloženy seznamy skladeb Jana Nováka členěné podle životních etap, systematický katalog sborových skladeb a jejich notové ukázky. Svoji práci chápe autor jako příspěvek k lepšímu pochopení mimořádného díla a výjimečné osobnosti skladatele Jana Nováka.

Abstract:

The present thesis discusses the interplay between Jan Novák’s creative output and his rather dramatic life story. The impact of his studies in the United States and his encounter with Bohuslav Martinů on all his subsequent work is underscored. First, the chapter on ‘The Period 1948-68’ sets out the reasons which made Novák’s decision to emigrate with his entire family inevitable. The following chapters evaluate his new compositions as well as his opportunities to find a place for himself in exile, within the context of various cultural and political trends of the time. In support of the conclusions reached, selected Novák’s letters are presented, along with several articles from the period press. A particular attention is devoted to Novák’s predilection for the Latin language, which was a major influence on almost all his vocal and vocal-instrumental compositions, as well as his choral works and the circumstances of their creation. Enclosed are lists of Novák’s compositions, categorized according to the stages of his life, and also a systematic catalog of his choral compositions, supplemented with musical examples. The author conceives of his work as a contribution to a more adequate understanding of the extraordinary artistic creation and unique personality of the composer Jan Novák.
