Self-concept and anxiety in children with ADHD

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá sebepojetím dětí s ADHD. Zkoumá, jak se liší od obrazu, kteří o těchto dětech mají druzí a také tzv. Positive Illusory Bias. Zároveň monitoruje míru úzkosti těchto dětí a její vztah k sebekonceptu. Data byla získána od 122 žáků ZŠ, z toho 54 dětí s ADHD a 68 dětí zdravých. Administrovány byly dotazníky SPAS – Sebepojetí školní úspěšnosti dětí a CMAS – Škála zjevné úzkosti pro děti, jako objektivní kritérium byly stanoveny známky na poslední školní vysvědčení. Bylo zjištěno, že sebepojetí dětí s ADHD v prostředí školy je nižší než sebepojetí dětí zdravých ve všech měřených doménách, ve dvou z nich signifikantně. Zároveň dosahují výrazně nižšího hodnocení matematických i jazykových dovedností od svých pedagogů. Děti s ADHD projevují sklon k Positive Illusory Bias. Ačkoli je sebepojetí dětí s ADHD ve srovnání se zdravými dětmi poměrně negativní, obraz učitelů o těchto dětem je ještě negativnější. Děti s ADHD se projevují jako úzkostnější než děti zdravé, ne však signifikantně. Úzkostnější děti mají nižší sebepojetí školní úspěšnosti než děti emočně vyrovnané. Děti s ADHD mají ve srovnání se zdravými dětmi výrazně nižší potřebu sociální desirability.

Abstract:

The thesis is dealing with self-concept in children with ADHD. It examines how it differs from the picture of others and also so-called Positive Bias Illusory. At the same time it monitors the rate of anxiety of these children and their relationship to self-concept. These data were obtained from 122 primary school pupils, of which 54 children are with ADHD and 68 are healthy children. The questionnaires which were used, were SPAS (Student's Perception of Ability Scale) and CMAS (Childern's Manifest Anxiety Scale) and as an objective criterion, the grades at the last school report were set. It was found that the self-concept of children with ADHD in a school environment is lower than the self-concept of healthy children at all measured domains, two of them significantly. Concurrently they achieve significantly lower ratings of their mathematical and language skills from their pedagogues. Children with ADHD exhibit a tendency to Positive Bias Illusory. Though the self-concept of children with ADHD compared to healthy children is rather negative, the image of these children at their teachers is even more negative. Children with ADHD appear as more anxious than healthy children, but not significantly. Anxious children have lower self-concept of their success at school than children emotionally balanced. Children with ADHD, compared with healthy children, have significantly lower need for social desirability.
