Resettlement from Burma to the Czech Republic perceived by Chin refugees

Abstract:

Od roku 2009 žije v České republice přibližně čtyřicetičlenná skupina barmských uprchlíků, pocházejících z pronásledovaného etnika Čjinů. Pozornost této práce se obrací k této nepočetné skupině uprchlíků, kteří do ČR přijeli v rámci pilotního programu přesídlení a získali zde azyl. Prostřednictvím hloubkových rozhovorů se autorka snaží odpovědět na hlavní výzkumnou otázku, jak čjinští uprchlíci vnímají proces přesídlení a integrace do české společnosti. Pomocí biografického přístupu zachycuje zkušenosti Čjinů před, ale zejména po jejich příjezdu do ČR. Práce podává obraz o tom, jak se Čjinům jeví proces jejich integrace do české společnosti v různých dimenzích dle analytického modelu Agera a Stranga. V oblasti práce, bydlení a vzdělávání Čjinové narážejí na strukturální překážky, které jim integraci znesnadňují (např. nedostupnost jazykových či rekvalifikačních kurzů). Ve sféře sociálních vztahů volí každá z čjinských rodin jinou strategii. Zatímco někteří se spoléhají na sociální kapitál bonding, tedy členy čjinské komunity, jiní využívají sociálního kapitálu typu bridging a linking sociálními mosty na českou populaci i sociálními napojeními na představitele státu. Všichni Čjinové se cítí symbolicky vylučováni z české společnosti, což do budoucna představuje problém při jejich začleňování do české společnosti.

Abstract:

Since 2009, there has been a group of forty Burmese refugees living in the Czech Republic, who have been persecuted on grounds of their Chin ethnicity. The thesis is focused on this group of refugees, who came to the Czech Republic in the framework of the resettlement programme and gained asylum here. Conducting in-depth interviews, the author strives for responding the key research question: “How do Chin refugees perceive the process of resettlement and integration into Czech society?” By the biographical perspective, the author portrays how Chin refugees perceive the process of their integration into Czech society in different dimensions according to the analytical model of Alastair Ager and Alison Strang. In the fields of work, housing and education, Chins are confronted with structural barriers, which make their integration more difficult (e.g. unavailability of language and re-skill courses). In the sphere of social relationships, each Chin family adopts different strategy. While some are relying on the bonding social capital, i.e. members of Chin community, others are using bridging and linking social capital, based on social bridges with Czech people and social links with state representatives. All Chin people are feeling symbolically excluded from Czech society, which can cause a problem for their integration into Czech society in the future.
