Football Fandom and Representations of National Identities in Sociological Perspective

Abstract:

The thesis concentrates on the phenomenon of football fans and their behaviour at large international tournaments. The main emphasis is placed on the carnivalesque atmosphere present in the stadiums of World Cup 2010 in South Africa, which was created by the cheering fans dressed in national colours or traditional costumes. The main goal of this work is to introduce existing analytical concepts and find other appropriate theories in the depository of social sciences, which could help to describe and explain the phenomenon of the carnivalesque football fandom. The analysis is mainly based on the works of Richard Giulianotti, who concentrates on the issue of football fans and creates the taxonomy of their social roles and their place in the social scheme. In response to Giulianotti, the main problem is divided into three key analytical concepts; therefore special chapters deal with the sociological aspects of sport spectatorship, theories of cultural representations and concepts of national identities and celebratory nationalism. A complex view on the phenomenon of football fandom is represented in the theory of informal sociability by Georg Simmel and Michele Maffesoli’s neotribalism. The thesis also deals with the historical dimension of football fandom through analyzing historical material - special issues of the sports magazine Stadión dedicated to the Football World Cups in the years 1954 - 2006.

Abstract:

Práca sa venuje fenoménu futbalových fanúšikov a ich správaniu sa na medzinárodných šampionátoch. Dôraz je kladený najmä na karnevalovú atmosféru na štadiónoch Majstrovstiev sveta 2010 v Južnej Afrike, ktorú vytvárali fanúšikovia oblečení v národných farbách a v národnými tradíciami inšpirovaných kostýmoch. Hlavným cieľom práce je predstaviť existujúce a v arzenáli sociálnych vied nájsť nové analytické koncepty, vhodné na popísanie a vysvetlenie tohto fenoménu. Analýza vychádza najmä zo štúdií Richarda Giulianottiho, ktorý vytvára typológiu sociálnej role futbalového fanúšika a jeho umiestnenie v sociálnej štruktúre. V nadväznosti na Giulianottiho je fanúšikovská problematika rozčlenená na tri hlavné analytické prístupy, ktoré sú v jednotlivých kapitolách predstavené cez sociologické pohľady na divácky šport, teórie kultúrnych reprezentácií a koncepty národných identít a oslavného vlastenectva. Komplexný pohľad na danú problematiku poskytuje najmä teória Georga Simmela o neformálnej sociabilite a Michela Maffesoliho o neotribalizme. Práca sa venuje aj historickému rozmeru futbalového fanúšikovstva prostredníctvom rozboru historických prameňov – fotografií uverejnených v špeciálnych vydaniach športového časopisu Stadión venovaných Majstrovstvám sveta vo futbale (v rozpätí rokov 1954 - 2006).
