Utilization of Digital Photography in the Process of Institutionalization of Fine Art, Documentation and Presentation of Fine Art by Means of Technical Image.

Abstract:

Doktorský projekt si klade za cíl zkoumat v teoretické i praktické rovině využití aktuálních technických možností a postupů založených na principech digitální fotografie při dokumentaci a prezentaci uměleckých děl, a to zejména v souvislosti s provozem institucí, které shromažďují umělecké sbírky. Vzhledem k vývoji v oblasti digitálních technologií vzniká řada nových možností jak dokumentovat a prezentovat umělecká díla pomocí technického obrazu. Cílem této disertační práce je zmapovat a experimentálně ověřit tyto nové technicky vyspělé postupy, jmenovitě zejména digitalizaci dvojrozměrných uměleckých děl, za účelem zaznamenání jejich věrné podoby pro potřeby tvorby záchovných digitálních kopií v souvislosti s ochranou kulturního dědictví a jeho zpřístupnění. Galerie a muzea stále více využívají možnost představit své sbírky, výstavy a aktivity on-line, prostřednictvím webových stránek. Vzniklá situace otevírá prostor pro uplatnění nových způsobů vizuální komunikace s recipientem; vedle zpřístupnění digitalizovaných uměleckých děl jsou představovány virtuální prohlídky či panoramatické vizualizace výstavních prostor. Disertační práce mapuje tyto trendy a výstupy významných projektů paměťových a kulturních institucí v souvislostech s aktuálně využívanými postupy vycházejícími z digitální fotografické praxe při digitalizaci uměleckých sbírek. V souvislosti s digitalizací uměleckých sbírek vzniká také řada otázek týkajících se využívání výsledků těchto projektů a jejich specifických dopadů například v situaci, kdy se recipient setkává s uměleckým dílem často zprostředkovaně, ve formě jeho digitální reprodukce. Disertace se věnuje také prozkoumání vzájemného vztahu originálu a jeho reprodukce, z hlediska definice umělecké hodnoty a souvislostech s věrností reprodukce. Praktickým výstupem doktorského projektu je prozkoumání a zvládnutí vybraných technicky vyspělých fotografických postupů a jejich uplatnění na modelových příkladech při digitalizaci uměleckých děl. Proces reprodukování - transferu pomocí média digitální fotografie - je prozkoumáván také v dalších souvislostech, například v situaci, kdy tvůrce překročí roli schopného technologa, precisního uživatele média, pracujícího podle předpokládaných schémat či konceptů. Tato situace, kdy si tvůrce v rámci gramatiky média stanoví nová možná pravidla, je experimentálně zkoumána v rámci projektu Sampling Experiment. Konkrétní praktické výstupy experimentální roviny disertační práce byly prezentovány formou výstavy Digitised Painting, která byla uspořádána v Galerii Středočeského kraje v Kutné Hoře v termínu 8/2 17/5 2015.

Abstract:

The dissertation shall explore in both theoretical as well as practical way the actual possibilities and technical procedures of digital photography which can be used in the documentation and presentation of art artifacts; especially in context with the mission of the institutions which take care of art collections. Having in mind the fast development in the field of digital technologies in the last decade, new challenges appear in the issues of documentation and presentation of art objects. The aim of the dissertation is to map and experimentally verify these new, technically advanced procedures, especially the digitization of two dimensional art works, and its objective to record truly the visual part of the original for the needs of digital preservation and creation of on-line access to this type of cultural heritage. Galleries and museums take the opportunity to introduce their exhibitions, collections and activities on-line, using their own web pages. Therefore new possibilities of visual communication with the recipient occur. Besides the presentation of the art itself there have appeared panoramic visualizations of whole exhibitions or virtual tours through the museums. This dissertation maps these new trends and outputs of significant projects of memory and culture institutions in connection with currently used approaches based on practice of digital photography used in the digitization of art collections. Digitization of art brings many new questions which regard the contributions of these projects and their specific impact on the perception of art. For example, people are often confronted with the digital reproduction of certain work of art instead of having the chance to see the original owing to these technologies. The dissertation also explores the relation between the original and its reproduction in terms of the art value in connection with reproduction fidelity. Practical outcome of this doctoral project is the introduction of technically advanced digital photography processes and exercise of these in case studies of a digitization of two dimensional art work. The process of reproduction - transfer made by the medium of digital photography - is explored also in further relationships, for example in a situation when the author exceeds the role of technologist, precise user of the media, which works only according to the anticipated schemes or concepts. The situation, when the creator within the grammar of used medium sets new possible rules, is experimentally explored in Sampling Experiment. The practical results of the experimental part of the dissertation were presented by exhibition Digitised Painting, which took place in Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region in Kutna Hora in 8/2 17/5 2015.
