Analysis of IoT systems using methods of artificial intelligence

Abstract:

Internet vecí postupne mení svet, spájajúc miliardy inteligentných zariadení naprieč rôznymi prostrediami. Tieto zariadenia, často fungujúce autonómne, rýchlo expandujú, čo priťahuje pozornosť kyberzločincov, nechávajúc aplikácie náchylnejšími k útokom a zneužitiam. Príkladom takéhoto útoku je neslávne známy Mirai botnet. Tradičné bezpečnostné riešenia nespĺňajú požiadavky a obmedzenia internetu vecí, napríklad limitované zdroje používaných zariadení. K preklenutiu tejto priepasti sa v poslednom čase objavili sľubné riešenia založené na umelej inteligencií. Cieľom tejto práce je poskytnúť prehľad využitia metód založených na umelej inteligencií pre úlohy v kybernetickej bezpečnosti v kontexte internetu vecí a demonštrovať ich použitie navrhnutím techniky, ktorá umožní nahliadnúť do hrozieb zahrnutých v dátach. Najprv je preskúmané bezpečnostné prostredie internetu vecí, analyzujú sa zraniteľnosti, vrstvy a rôzne útoky. Ďalej sa skúmajú metódy umelej inteligencie používané na mitigáciu bezpečnostných hrozieb v prostredí internetu vecí, poskytujúc prehľad o siedmich modeloch strojového učenia a štyroch modeloch hlbokého učenia. Praktická časť štúdie zahŕňa použitie IoT-23 datasetu pre detekciu škodlivej sieťovej aktivity, čo zahŕňa exploračnú analýzu, výber vhodných atribútov a natrénovanie 72 modelov. Následne sa na každý model aplikuje metóda SHAP s cieľom poskytnúť hlbší pohľad na hrozby prítomné v dátach. Efektívnosť SHAP metódy je dôsledne vyhodnotená na základe posúdenia konzistencie dôležitosti atribútov naprieč súhrnnými grafmi SHAP.

Abstract:

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the world, connecting billions of smart devices across various environments. These devices, often operating autonomously, are rapidly proliferating. However, this expansion also draws the attention of cybercriminals, leaving IoT applications more susceptible to attacks and exploitations, exemplified by the infamous Mirai botnet attack. Traditional security solutions do not satisfy IoT's requirements, for instance, the devices' limited resources. Bridging this gap, AI-based countermeasures have recently emerged, offering promising solutions to IoT security threats. The thesis aims to give an overview of using AI methods for cybersecurity tasks in the IoT context and demonstrate the usage by proposing an AI-based technique for providing insights into the threats included in the IoT data. Firstly, the security landscape of the IoT is explored, analyzing the vulnerabilities, layers and attacks. Furthermore, AI methods used to mitigate security threats in IoT are surveyed, providing a comprehensive overview of seven machine learning and four deep learning models. The practical aspect of the study involves using the IoT-23 dataset for malicious traffic detection, which includes exploratory analysis, feature selection, and the training of 72 AI models. Subsequently, the SHAP method is applied for each model to provide deeper insights into the threats present in the data. The effectiveness of SHAP is rigorously evaluated by assessing the consistency of the importance of features across SHAP Summary Plots.
