Notions of students of journalism about the journalistic profession and its changes after practice

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je prozkoumat změnu motivací a profesních postojů studentů bakalářského stupně Masarykovy univerzity po absolvování povinné tříměsíční praxe. Klíčovou motivací pro tento výzkum je přinést ojedinělé informace týkající se budoucích novinářů, kteří pravděpodobně budou v následujících letech informovat širokou veřejnost o dění ve společnosti. A hlavně postihnout, co s jejich motivacemi a postoji týkajícími se charakteristik ideálního novináře, rolí novináře a etickým smýšlením udělá první dlouhodobější kontakt s praxí, která panuje v současné době v redakcích českých médií. Na to, jaké motivace a postoje si studenti nesou z univerzity a zda jim vydrží i po praxi, případně jak se změní, se pokusíme odpovědět touto prací. Abychom zvolený cíl naplnili, zvolili jsme kombinaci kvantitativního a kvalitativního výzkumu. Založený je tak na dotazníkovém šetření a následných hloubkových polostrukturovaných rozhovorech. Z výpovědí 38 účastníků našeho kvaziexperimentu se ukazuje, že zatímco postoje týkající se charakteristik ideálního novináře nebo jeho role se příliš praxí nemění, v etických postojích studenti polevují.

Abstract:

The aim of master thesis is to examine the changing of motivations and profession attitudes of bachelor´s degree students at Masaryk University after three-month mandatory practice. The key motivation for this research is to provide unique information relating to the future journalists, who would probably inform the general public about what is happening in society in future years. We mainly want to explore what will happen with their motivations and attitudes regarding the characteristics of ideal journalist, roles of journalist and ethics thinking after the first long-term contact with the reality, which is usual in Czech media newsrooms at the present. We will try to answer the questions which motivations and attitudes the students have from university education and if they have the same one after the practice, or eventually how they changed. In order to fulfill the chosen target, we chose the combination of quantitative and qualitative research. It is based on survey and subsequent in-depth semi-structured interviews. From the answers of 38 participants of our quasi-experiment, it is seen that they are not changes in the view of the characteristic of ideal journalist or in the view of the role of journalist, but there is change in students’ ethics attitudes.
