Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Popular Theatre Forms of the Long English Restoration

Anotace:

Tato práce se zabývá třemi adaptacemi Shakespearovy komedie Sen noci svatojánské. Jsou to konkrétně The Merry Conceited Humours of Bottom the Weaver (1661), The Fairy Queen: An Opera (1692) a The Comick Masque of Pyramus and Thisbe (1716), které se řadí mezi adaptace anglického restauračního divadla. Adaptace jsou zkoumány z pohledu žánru, historického a společenského kontextu, a tak odrážejí vývoj divadla v Anglii v sedmnáctém a osmnáctém století.

Abstract:

The focus of this thesis is the analysis of three adaptations of Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. These are The Merry Conceited Humours of Bottom the Weaver (1661), The Fairy Queen: An Opera (1692) and The Comick Masque of Pyramus and Thisbe (1716), all Restoration theatre adaptations. They are analysed from the point of view of genre and historical and social context, thus mirroring the development of the English theatre in the seventeenth and eighteenth century.
