Multisensory Structured Language Instruction in Vocabulary Learning Strategies - Comparison of Influences on Learners with and without Specific Learning Difficulties

Anotácia:

Cílem této diplomové práce je popsat a analyzovat obvyklé učební strategie studentů středních škol v rámci učení se slovní zásoby a porovnat je v závislosti na přítomnosti specifické poruchy učení (SPU). Dalším cílem je porovnat efekt učebních strategií na bázi multisenzoriálního přístupu – Multisensory structured learning (MSL) – v rámci učení se slovní zásoby na studentech s a bez SPU. Studenti zapojení do tohoto výzkumu vyplnili dotazník, praktikovali učební strategie na báze MSL a poskytli rozhovor, kde popsali efekt těchto strategií. Diplomová práce dokazuje, že obvyklé učební strategie všech respondentů jsou si podobné, avšak, přítomnost SPU je různě ovlivňuje. Dokazuje také, že učební strategie na bázi MSL pozitivně ovlivnili učení se obou skupin respondentů. Každá skupina však připisuje tento vliv jinému aspektu multisenzoriálního přístupu. Diplomová práce se dělí na tři části – teoretickou část, metodologii a empirickou část. Teoretická část popisuje terminologii a vysvětluje koncepty důležité pro výzkum. Tato část je rozdělená do pěti kapitol – kapitoly 2-6. Kapitola 2 definuje SPU, přibližuje typy těchto poruch, jejich charakteristiky a příčiny. Kapitola 3 definuje MSL, její vlastnosti, historii a popisuje vybrané příklady MSL aktivit. Kapitola 4 krátce popisuje učební styly, přičemž se soustřeďuje především na smyslové preference a kapitola 5 popisuje učební strategie. Kapitola 6 definuje slovní zásobu, charakterizuje její části a popisuje způsoby učení se slovní zásoby. Druhá část diplomové práce je metodologie. Tato část charakterizuje metody použité pro výzkum jako smíšené s důrazem na kvalitativní metodu. Výzkum pracuje s malým počtem respondentů a analyzuje jejich subjektivní názory a zkušenosti. V této části jsou dále popsaní respondenti a všechny výzkumní postupy (dotazník, MSL učební strategie a rozhovor). Popisuje také jejich výhody a limitace. Dále popisuje dotazník a rozhovor, jejich dizajn a otázky. Také se soustřeďuje na dizajn MSL učebních strategií. Empirická část práce – kapitoly 8-11 – popisuje výsledky dotazníku a analyzuje je. Tato data jsou později detailněji adresována v analýze rozhovorů Použití dat v rámci dizajnu strategií je také popsáno v této kapitole. Kapitola 9 shrnuje výsledky rozhovoru a poskytuje detailní popis obvyklých učebních praktik každého respondenta. Také popisuje jejich důvody pro výběr učebních strategií, které vyzkoušeli a jejich celkovou zkušenost s nimi. Analýza obvyklých učebních strategií všech respondentů je popsaná v kapitole 10. Tato kapitola používá výsledky dotazníku jakož i data získaná z rozhovoru. Ukazuje, že učební strategie všech respondentů jsou podobné. Přítomnost SPU tyto strategie různě ovlivňuje, ale je důležité dodat, že tyto rozdíly mohou být způsobeny i jinými faktory. Kapitola 11 je analýza použití MSL učebních strategii každého respondenta a jejich zkušenosti s nimi. Popisuje, jak byl volný výběr strategií důležitým faktorem pro jejich úspěch. Také ukazuje, jak byly respondenti ovlivněni svými obvyklými strategiemi při tomto výběru – podobnost s jejich rutinou byla v různých případech výhodou i nevýhodou. Dále popisuje celkový efekt nových strategií na obě skupiny respondentů a porovnává je. Nové strategie ovlivňovaly pozitivně obě skupiny, každá skupina však připisuje tento pozitivní vliv jinému aspektu MSL. Skupina s SPU ho připisuje systematickému aspektu a skupina bez SPU ho připisuje stimulaci smyslů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse habitual vocabulary learning strategies of upper-secondary school students and compare them regarding presence of a specific learning difficulty (SpLD). Besides this, its aim is to compare and contrast the effect of vocabulary learning strategies based on multisensory structured language instruction (or multisensory structured learning) (MSL) on the upper-secondary school students with and without an SpLD. The respondents involved in this research answered questionnaire, practiced the MSL based learning strategies, and were interviewed regarding their effects. It shows how the habitual learning processes of all respondents resemble each other and how the presence of an SpLD influences them to varying degree. Moreover, it shows that the MSL based learning strategies were beneficial for both groups of respondents, however, they ascribed their success to a different aspect of MSL. The thesis is divided into three parts – theoretical part, methodology, and empirical part. Theoretical part provides terminology and explanations of the key concepts this thesis works with. It is divided into five chapters – chapters 2-6. Chapter 2 defines SpLDs, provides examples of such difficulties, their characteristics, and causes. Chapter 3 defines MSL, describes its characteristics and history, as well as provides some examples of activities. Chapter 4 shortly describes learning styles, focusing on sensory preference and chapter 5 defines learning strategies. Chapter 6 defines vocabulary, characterizes its elements, and describes ways of learning it. The second part of the thesis is the methodology. It characterizes the methods used in the research as mixed with the emphasis on qualitative method, describing how it focuses on small number of respondents and their subjective experience and opinions. The respondents and all the tools used in the thesis – a questionnaire, MSL based learning strategies, and an interview – are elaborated on in this part and the advantages and limitations of them are stated. Additionally, it describes questionnaire design and interview design as well as the questionnaire and interview questions. Moreover, it focuses on strategy design and description of each strategy in detail. Empirical part – chapter 8-11 – describes the questionnaire results and analyses them. This data is later addressed in more detail in the interview analysis. The use of questionnaire data in the strategy design is described as well. Chapter 9 describes the interview data, providing detailed descriptions of each respondent’s habitual learning processes, their reasoning for the choice of MSL based strategies they tried, and their overall experience with them. The interview of each respondent is also provided with a conclusion. The analysis of the respondents’ habitual learning strategies is described in chapter 10. This chapter uses both, questionnaire data and interview data in drawing its conclusion. It shows that the respondents’ habitual learning is similar for all, the SpLD and non-SpLD respondents. Presence of an SpLD is stated to cause differences in these processes to a varying degree in both respondents with this diagnosis. However, it needs to be noted that these differences can be caused by other factors. Chapter 11 offers the analysis of the respondents’ use of and experience with the MSL based vocabulary learning strategies. It states that the option of free choice of strategies was an important factor in their success. Moreover, it shows how the respondents’ strategy choice was influenced by their similarity to what they practice within their study routine – these similarities both encouraged and discouraged the use of specific strategies. Additionally, it describes the overall effect of the MSL based strategies, comparing the two groups.
