The Deployment of Brno and Moravia in the Novels of Simon Mawer

Abstract:

Střední Evropa byla vždy místem pulzující historie. Vědecký pokrok konce devatenáctého století a dramatické sociální a kulturní změny jako následek světových válek ovlivnily životy milionů lidí. Simon Mawer plně vnímal genius loci během svých návštěv Brna. Ve svém článku Mawer uvádí, že Brno – místo v samém srdci Evropy, výjimečné svou nevýjimečností, leží ve stínu svých větších sousedů Prahy a Vídně. Slovy Jiřího Kratochvíla, brněnského básníka a spisovatele, “Brno je místo, na němž leží prokletí provincionalismu.” (Mawer – Brno) A přesto Brno zaujímá význačné místo v životě Simona Mawera. Postavy jeho dvou knih, Mendlův trpaslík a Skleněný pokoj, mají mnoho společného. Životy Benedicta Lamberta, který je anglickým genetikem a vzdáleným příbuzným Johana Gregora Mendla, a život rodiny Landauerů, význačné brněnské židovské rodiny, a jejich domu, jsou převráceny naruby stejnými činiteli: zeměpisnou polohou, genomem a nevyzpytatelným osudem. Simon Mawer, je jedinečným autorem, který, jako Angličan a učitel biologie, dokáže čtenáři přednést příběhy z české historie umně proplétaje minulost a přítomnost, skutečnost a fikci. Jeho faktická přesnost s ohledem na architekturu památky UNESCO, vily Tugendhat, život zakladatele genetiky Gregora Mendla a místopis je výjimečná. Závěr této bakalářské práce definuje Mawera především jako humanistu. Jedna z mnoha sdělných funkcí literatury je uvedení vědecký objevů a následných etických důsledků do kontextu lidského života, kde se realizují a nabývají důvěrné zkušenosti. Mawerův vzkaz doručený čtenáři románovými postavami není aktuální pouze pro ty, jejichž genetická výjimečnost je odlišná od té většinové, protože, podle Mawera, “my všichni jsme oběťmi svých genů a mašinerie, kterou naše geny spouští.” (Penguin Readers Guide)

Abstract:

Central Europe has always been a place of vibrant history. Late 19th century scientific progress and dramatic social and cultural changes resulting from World Wars affected lives of millions of people. Simon Mawer, during his visits to Brno, seems to perceive genius loci of the place to the fullest. Mawer states in his paper, that Brno is a place distinguished only by its lack of distinction, set at the very heart of Europe, however always in the shadow of it neighbors Vienna and Prague. Using the words of Jiří Kratochvíl, a writer and a poet from Brno, “Brno is a city on which there lies the curse of provincionalism.” (Mawer – Brno) Yet Brno has occupied a large part of Mawer’s life. Characters of his two books Mendel’s Dwarf and The Glass Room have much in common. Life of Benedict Lambert who is an English geneticist and a remote relative of Johan Gregor Mendel, and those of the Landauers, an elite Jewish family from Brno, and their house’s, are upset by the same factors; geography, genome and capricious fate. Simon Mawer is a unique writer who, as an Englishman and a biology teacher for most of his life, is able to bring original stories from Czech history, skilfully intertwining past and presence, reality and fiction. His factual accuracy regarding architecture of a UNESCO sight the villa Tugendhat, the life of the father of genetics Gregor Mendel and local topography is outstanding. The conclusion of this thesis should define Mawer as a humanist. One of literature’s many revelatory roles is to set scientific discovery and the consequent ethical debates in the context of the lives where their outcomes will be realised and experienced intimately. The message Mawer delivered in his work through his characters does not apply to only to people whose genetic specification differs from the majority, because, according to Mawer, “we are all victims of our genes and of the machinery that the genes have assembled for us.” (Penguin Readers Guide).
