THE BROTHER OF THE OTHER: Immigration from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine to the Czech Republic and the boundaries of belonging

Abstract:

Cílem dizertační práce je prozkoumání kulturních procesů vyjednávání symbolických hranic přináležení v českém imigračním kontextu. S použitím teoretických konceptů stigmatu, stigmatizace a politiky přináležení se zabývám otázkou, jak se utvářejí symbolické hranice přináležení skrze stigma v každodenních interakcích v sociálním a kulturním kontextu imigrace. Toto téma je zkoumáno z perspektivy imigrantů ze tří zemí bývalého Sovětského svazu – Běloruska, Ukrajiny a Ruska – žijících v České republice. Zabývám se jejich reflexí vlastní pozice imigrantů, formováním percepce sebe sama jako imigrantů v sociálních interakcích a jejich zkušenostmi stigmatizace. Dizertační práce si všímá rozporuplné kulturní reprezentace této skupiny migrantů v českém prostoru etnizovaných vztahů – zvláštního napětí mezi pozicí ‚Druhého‘ (‚Other) a ‚Bratra‘ (‚Brother‘) ve vztahu k Čechům. Toto napětí odráží minulé i současné procesy vytváření národa ve střední a východní Evropě, historické politické vztahy mezi socialistickým Československem a Sovětským svazem a migrační procesy v období po roce 1989. Studie je založena na kvalitativní analýze 26 biografických narativních interview uskutečněných v Praze a v Brně mezi lety 2006 a 2010 s imigranty z Běloruska, Ruska a Ukrajiny, kteří se přistěhovali do České republiky po roce 1989 a kteří zde dlouhodobě žijí. Představení výsledků analýzy se odvíjí od dvou typů stigmatu, které jsem ve výzkumu identifikovala: stigmatu imigrantů a stigmatu viníků. V kapitole, která se věnuje imigrantskému stigmatu, pojednávám o zkušenostech imigrantů se stigmatizací, jež oscilují mezi zobecnělou odlišností imigrantů a odlišností spojenou s určitým etnonacionálním původem. Zabývám se též reprezentacemi imigračního kontextu v rozhovorech s účastníky výzkumu a tím, jak zakoušejí etnizované distinkce. Popisuji též některé způsoby, jimiž vyjednávají symbolické hranice mezi sebou a druhými a vznášejí nároky na uznání jejich hodnoty (worth) jako imigrantů v České republice. V kapitole, která se věnuje stigmatu viníků spojenému s invazí vojsk Varšavské smlouvy do Československa v roce 1968 a jeho následnou okupací sovětskou armádou, upozorňuji na význam minulosti a kolektivní paměti ve vztahu k migraci. S odkazem na teorii kulturního traumatu nastiňuji, jak jsou reakce na toto stigma ovlivněny národními historickými narativy a tím, jakou roli v nich hrají různé skupiny. Ukazuji též imigraci z bývalého Sovětského svazu do Česka jako v Evropě ojedinělý případ pro studium toho, jak se minulé politické vztahy nadvlády a podřízenosti promítají do imigrační zkušenosti, když jsou imigranti vnímáni přijímací společností jako bývalí ‚kolonizátoři‘, a když hostitelská společnost používá tento status k tomu, aby je označila jako Druhé. V této práci uplatňuji v českém kontextu spíše opomíjenou kulturní perspektivu utváření symbolických hranic a vyjednávání členství a přináležení při zkoumání imigrace z Běloruska, Ruska a Ukrajiny do České republiky, což mi umožňuje nabídnout nový vhled do kulturního repertoáru českého imigračního kontextu a vyjednávání hranic češství. Dizertace přispívá do literatury o migraci ve vztahu ke stigmatizaci, kulturním traumatu a postkoloniálním odkazům minulosti.

Abstract:

The thesis aims at exploration of the cultural processes of negotiation of the symbolic boundaries of belonging in the Czech immigration context. Using the theoretical concepts of stigma, stigmatization and the politics of belonging, it examines how symbolic boundaries of belonging are constituted through stigma in everyday encounters in the social and cultural context of immigration. The problem is studied from the perspective of immigrants from three countries of the former Soviet Union – Belarus, Ukraine and Russia – to the Czech Republic. I address their reflections on being in the position of immigrants, the formation of their self-perception in social encounters and their experience of stigmatization. The thesis unpacks an ambiguous cultural representation of this group of migrants in the Czech space of ethnicized relations - a peculiar tension between the position of the ‘Other’ and the ‘Brother’ of the Czechs that reflects past and present nation-building processes in Central and Eastern Europe, historical political links between socialist Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union and post-1989 migratory processes. The study is based on the qualitative analysis of twenty-six biographical narrative interviews conducted in Prague and Brno between 2006 and 2010 with immigrants from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine who moved to the Czech Republic after 1989 and who have lived there on a long-term basis. The presentation of the results of the analysis revolves around two types of stigma identified in the research: immigrant stigma and the stigma of the perpetrators. In a chapter devoted to immigrant stigma, I discuss immigrants’ experiences of stigmatization oscillating between generalized immigrant difference and difference linked to a particular ethnonational origin. I draw attention to the interviewees’ representation of the immigration context and their experiences of ethnicized distinctions. Moreover, I depict some of the ways in which they negotiate the symbolic boundaries between the self and other and claim worth as immigrants in the Czech Republic. In a chapter dealing with the stigma of the perpetrators associated with the 1968 Warsaw Treaty Troops invasion into Czechoslovakia and its subsequent occupation by the Soviet Army, I draw attention to the significance of the past and collective memory in migration. I also discuss the ways in which responses to this stigma are influenced by national historical narratives and the roles various groups play in them, using the perspective of the theory of cultural trauma. I highlight immigration from the former Soviet Union to Czechia as a rather unique case in Europe for the study of the influence of past relations of domination and subordination on the immigration experience when the immigrants are perceived by the host society as former ‘colonizers’ and this status is used to mark them as the Other. Adopting a rather neglected cultural perspective of symbolic boundary making and negotiation of membership and belonging to the study of immigration from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine to the Czech Republic, the thesis provides novel insight into the cultural repertoire of the Czech immigration context and the negotiation of the boundaries of Czechness. The thesis contributes to the literature on migration and stigmatization, cultural trauma and postcolonial legacies.
