Erosion of the Authoritative Discourse in Czech Theatre Reviewing within the Period of So-called Perestroika (1985–1989)

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá erozí autoritativního diskursu v české divadelní kritice v období tzv. přestavby (1985–1989). Zaměřuje se na oblast, jež dosud nebyla téměř zpracována, a pokouší se poskytnout podrobnější vhled do praxe divadelní kritiky, která je chápána jako průnik mediálního, politického a divadelního diskursu. Autorka také usiluje o probádání vlivu sovětské „přestavby“ na českou divadelní kritiku. Metodologie práce je inspirována Bachtinovým konceptem „autoritativního diskursu“ užitého historikem Michalem Pullmannem k explikaci rozpadu tzv. komunistického režimu v Československu v letech 1985–1989. Analýza strategií kritiků je odvozena od klasifikace modů operandi ideologie a strategií symbolické konstrukce britského sociologa J. B. Thompsona.

Abstract:

The doctoral thesis deals with erosion of the authoritative discourse in Czech theatre reviewing practice within the period of so-called “perestroika” (1985–1989). It is focused on the field which has hardly been covered by scholars, and aspires to create a more detailed image of theatre reviewing practice, which is understood as an intersection of media, political and theatre discourses. The author also explores the impact of Soviet “perestroika” on the Czech theatre reviewing. The methodology of the thesis is inspired by Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of “authoritative discourse” used by the Czech historian Michal Pullmann to explicate the disintegration of the so-called communist regime in Czechoslovakia between 1985 and 1989. The analysis of strategies used by theatre critics is derived from the classification of ideology’s general modes of operation and from the strategies of symbolic construction proposed by the British sociologist J. B. Thompson.
