The difference in perceived meaningfulness of life between atheists and Christians.

Abstract:

Ve své práci se zabývám rozdílností ve vnímané životní smysluplnosti mezi ateisty s křesťany. Hlavní cíl práce je zkoumání toho, zda existují statisticky významné rozdíly ve vnímané životní smysluplnosti mezi ateisty s křesťany. Dále zjišťuji, zda existují v prožívání životní smysluplnosti rozdíly mezi muži a ženami a jakou roli hraje věk v prožívání smysluplnosti. V první části práce vysvětluji pojmy životní smysluplnost, náboženství, křesťanství a ateismus. Druhá část práce je věnována průběhu a výsledkům výzkumu na souboru ateistů a křesťanů. Životní smysluplnost byla zjišťována pomocí dotazníku Existenciální škála a pro výsledky výzkumu byl použit Wilcoxonův pořadový test a t-test korelačního koeficientu. Celkový rozdíl ve vnímané životní smysluplnosti mezi ateisty a křesťany nebyl statisticky významný, avšak významnost se prokázala ve stupnicích "Sebepřesah" a "Personalita". Také se prokázala významná kladná korelace mezi věkem a Celkovým skóre u obou skupin, přičemž u křesťanů byla korelace vyšší. Znamená to, že s přibývajícím věkem mají vyšší míru vnímané životní smysluplnosti.

Abstract:

In this piece of work, I examine the dissimilarity in the perceived life meaningfulness between atheists and Christians. The main purpose of the research paper is to analyze whether statistically significant differences in the perceived life meaning fullness between atheists and Christians are existent. Furthermore, I study whether there are differences between men and women in how they experience life meaningfulness, and what role age plays in experiencing life meaningfulness. In the first part of the research I explain the concepts of life meaningfulness, religion, Christianity and atheism. The second part of the paper is dedicated to the process and results of the research conducted on groups of atheists and Christians. Life meaningfulness was analyzed using an Existential scale questionnaire, and for the results of this research the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and correlation coefficient t-test were used. The overall difference in the perceived life meaningfulness between atheists and Christians was not statistically significant, however, an importance was demonstrated on the 'Self-transcendence' and 'Personality' scales. A significant positive correlation between age and the overall score for both groups was demonstrated as well, while for Christians the correlation was higher. Thus, this means that with aging they achieve a higher rate of perceived life meaningfulness.
