Architecture of Non-Catholics in the Age of Reformation in Moravia. A Phenomenon of Renaissance Architecture before 1620

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce komplexně představuje fenomén sakrální architektury nekatolických stavebníků na Moravě. Práci otevírá nastínění kontextu politicko-církevních dějin v českých zemích s důrazem na moravské prostředí, který má za cíl vybavit čtenáře základními vědomostmi pro pochopení fungování raně novověké šlechtické společnosti. Následující kapitola pojednává jednak o liturgii nejvýznamnějších nekatolických konfesí, zejména Luterství a Jednoty bratrské, a v druhé části je rozebrán koncept sakrálního prostoru z hlediska bádání od 16. století po současnost, a také uspořádání vnitřního prostoru kostelů v rámci požadavků daných konfesí. Závěr kapitoly představuje zjištění, že nekatolické kostely nebyly definovány ani tak svou architektonickou formou, jako právě liturgií a prostoru jí přizpůsobeném. Poslední kapitola ve své prvé části definuje osobnost objednavatele a jeho možných motivací a seznamuje též s problematikou konfesionality v architektuře. Závěrečnou část tvoří tři případové studie do severomoravských panství nekatolických stavebníků, kterými jsou Hohenzollernové na panství krnovském a bohumínském, Minsterberkové na panství šternberském a Kobylkové z Kobylího na panství sovineckém. Záměrem je zevrubné vykreslení osobnosti stavebníků a zejména diverzity možných motivací, které vedly ke stavění jejich nekatolických svatostánků.

Abstract:

The presented thesis analyses the phenomenon of sacral architecture of non-Catholic builders in Moravia. The introductory section outlines the context of political and ecclesiastical history in the Czech lands with an emphasis on Moravia, which aims to equip readers with basic knowledge for understanding the functioning of early modern aristocratic society. The following chapter deals with the liturgy of the most important non-Catholic denominations, especially Lutheranism and the Unity of Brethren. Afterwards the concept of sacred space is analyzed in terms of research from the 16th century to the present, as well as the arrangement of the interior of churches within the requirements of the confessions. The conclusion of the chapter is the finding that non-Catholic churches were not defined so much by their architectural form as by the liturgy and the space adapted to it. The last chapter in its first part defines the personality of the customer, his possible motivations and also introduces the issue of confessionalism in architecture. The final part consists of three case studies of the North Moravian estates of non-Catholic builders, which are the Hohenzollerns on the Krnov and Bohumín estates, the Minsterberks on the Sternberg estate and Kobylkové from Kobylí on the Sovinec estate. The intention is a detailed depiction of the personality of the builders and especially the diversity of possible motivations that led to the construction of their non-Catholic churches.
