Electoral Reforms in Latin America in 1990s – the Case of Bolivia, Mexico and Venezuela

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá průběhem volebních reforem, které byly uskutečněny v 90. letech 20. století v Bolívii, Mexiku a Venezuele. Jejím cílem je analýza volebního systému před a po provedení reformy, a jeho dopadu na systém politických stran. Důraz je kladen rovněž na identifikaci příčin vedoucích ke změně s použitím teorie inherentních a kontingenčních faktorů Matthewa Shugarta. V závěru se práce snaží odpovědět na základní výzkumnou otázku, zda je možné u daných zemí vysledovat jisté obecné trendy a společné znaky.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the process of electoral reforms that were implemented in 1990s in Bolivia, Mexico and Venezuela. Its aim is to analyze the electoral system before and after the reform and its impact on party system. Emphasis is also placed on identifying the causes of change using the theory of inherent and contingent factors formulated by Matthew Shugart. In conclusion, the work tries to answer the primary question, whether it is possible for the selected countries to trace some general trends and common features.
