The importance of the graphic aspect of teaching materials: a comparison of the graphic elements of Aventura 1 textbook and its updated version Nueva Aventura 1

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the graphic aspect of didactic materials. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the basic definitions of a visual image and its function in the pedagogical environment are presented. In this context, different kinds of visual memory and learning styles are characterised, focusing on the processing of visual impulses from students and affecting the way students receive information. Furthermore, the thesis deals with different students' preferences, especially visual ones, as well as opportunities to incorporate graphic language into teaching. The thesis therefore outlines the physiological functioning of the human eye and brain, with a description of the laws of perception established by the Gestalt School. Furthermore, attention is paid to the characteristics of a wide range of graphic elements, which are an essential part of any graphic design. The practical part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of graphic elements in Spanish textbooks for secondary schools - Aventura 1 and its updated edition - Aventura nueva 1, which are compared on the basis of similarity or difference of graphic elements with the offer of possible adjustments and changes in accordance with the laws of percep-tion. This thesis aims to highlight the fact that the graphic aspect should not be neglected in didactic materials, given the extent to which it is able to support or degrade the visual learning process.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá grafickým aspektem didaktických materiálů. V teoretické části práce jsou představeny základní definice vizuálního obrazu a jeho funkce v pedagogickém prostředí. V této souvislosti jsou charakterizovány druhy vizuální paměti a učebních stylů, které se soustředí na zpracování vizuálních podnětů u žáků a které mají vliv na způsob, jakým žáci informace přijímají. Dále se práce zabývá různými žákovskými preferencemi, a to především těmi vizuálními, rovněž také možnostmi, jak do výuky zakomponovat grafický jazyk. V práci je proto nastíněno fyziologické fungování lidského oka a mozku s popisem zákonů vnímání ustanovené Gestaltskou školou. Dále je pozornost věnována charakteristice širokého spektra grafických prvků, které jsou nezbytnou součástí každého grafického návrhu. Praktická část práce se soustředí na analýzu grafických prvků v učebnicích španělštiny pro střední školy – Aventura 1 a jejího aktualizovaného vydání – Nueva Aventura 1, které jsou srovnávány na základě podobnosti či odlišnosti grafických prvků s nabídnutím možných úprav a změn v souladu se zákony vnímání. Práce si klade za cíl poukázat na skutečnost, že grafický aspekt by v didaktických materiálech neměl být opomíjen vzhledem k tomu, do jaké míry je schopen podpořit či zhoršit proces vizuálního učení
