Effects of elastic taping on balance strategies in subjects with cerebellar ataxia: case report.

Abstract:

Cerebellar ataxia is characterized by walking disorders and alterations of the body equilibrium strategies. Normally, a stable orthostatism is obtained by an active contraction of muscular groups against the force of gravity, which is by itself highly destabilizing. For this reason it is possible to suppose that for ataxic subjects, an improvement of the quality of somatosensory information can be obtained through the application of Kinesio Tape on the ankle muscles, facilitating its role of body swaying controller. I studied the case of D.N.O., who was diagnosed with acute cerebellar ataxia. The middle-aged patient, immediately, volunteered for the study and for the use of Kinesi Tape to improve the quality of his life. My work begins with the description of the anatomy of the ankle (i.e., osseous, ligament and muscular components). I will then discuss cerebellar ataxia, the therapies and rehabilitation techniques used. Lately, I will deal with the clinical case of D.N.O.. The objective of the study is to evaluate, through scales of evaluation and stabilometric examination, the effects of Kinesio Tape as a muscle proprioceptive facilitator in postural stability in an upright station in ataxic subjects. The application of facilitatory Kinesio Tape to both sural triceps shows a proprioceptive role with an immediate effect on postural stability, thus reducing the amplitude of the "sway envelope", the speed and the amplitude of oscillation in the two planes of movement.

L'atassia si manifesta con alterazioni del cammino e delle strategie di equilibrio. Il mantenimento di un ortostatismo stabile richiede la contrazione attiva di gruppi muscolari contro la forza di gravit? la quale ? fortemente destabilizzante. Si pu? a tal proposito ipotizzare che per soggetti atassici un miglioramento della qualit? delle informazioni somatosensoriali possa essere ottenuto tramite l'applicazione del Kinesio Tape alla muscolatura agente sulla caviglia, facilitandone il ruolo di controllore delle oscillazioni corporee. Ho approfondito il caso di D.N.O., a cui ? stata diagnostica l'atassia cerebellare acuta. Il paziente, di media et?, si ? prestato immediatamente a questo tipo di studio e all'utilizzo del Kinesio Tape per migliorare la qualit? della vita. Inizier? il mio lavoro con la descrizione dell'anatomia della caviglia, ovvero delle sue componenti ossee, legamentose e muscolari. Successivamente tratter? l'atassia cerebellare, le terapie e le tecniche di riabilitazione utilizzate. Infine affronter? il caso clinico di D.N.O. a cui applicher? il kinesio Tape. L'obiettivo dello studio ? di valutare tramite scale di valutazione ed esame stabilometrico gli effetti del Kinesio Tape come facilitatore propriocettivo muscolare nella stabilit? posturale in stazione eretta in soggetti atassici. L'applicazione di Kinesio Tape facilitatorio ad entrambi i tricipiti surali mostra avere un ruolo propriocettivo con un'efficacia immediata sulla stabilit? posturale, riducendo in questo modo l'ampiezza dello "sway envelope", la velocit? e l' ampiezza di oscillazione nei due piani di movimento.
