The Concept of "Plan" in Lis de Mer by André Pieyre de Mandiargues

Abstract:

The theme of the bachelor’s diploma thesis is the concept of “plan” in the novella Lis de Mer written by a French author André Pieyre de Mandiargues. The aim of the work is to prove, analyze and characterize the presence of the “plan” in the acts of the main character, Vanina Mari, and in the novella as such. The thesis is based on the argument which claims that the main character acts according to certain “plan”. Wishing to accomplish her aim, she fulfills its phases with a great sense for exactitude, thoroughness and caution. The relationship between these phases (between the first and last one in particular) is then described as a relationship of predetermination and fatality. The presence of a “supreme power”, which sometimes enters in the development of the story and controls thus the progression of the “plan”, represents another important argument of the work. In addition, the thesis treats the ideas of “accidentalness” and “non-wandering”, supported by some literary critics, which are in fact in opposition to the concept of “plan”. Nevertheless, the bachelor’s diploma thesis analyzes not only the thematic aspect of the novella, but also its formal aspect – including the construction of the story as well as the language and style of the author.

Abstract:

Témou bakalárskej diplomovej práce je koncepcia „plánu“ v novele Lis de Mer, ktorej autorom je francúzsky spisovateľ André Pieyre de Mandiargues. Jej cieľom je dokázať, analyzovať a charakterizovať prítomnosť „plánu“ v konaní hlavnej hrdinky, ako aj v diele ako takom. Podstatou práce je teda tvrdenie, že hlavná postava novely, Vanina Mari, koná podľa presne určneného „plánu“, ktorého etapy plní s precíznou dôkladnosťou a obozretnosťou, majúc istý vopred avizovaný cieľ. Vzťah medzi týmito etapami, no najmä medzi prvou a poslednou, je opísaný ako vzťah predeterminácie a fatality. Ďalším dôležitým argumentom je prítomnosť „vyššej moci“, ktorá do deja miestami zasahuje a dozerá tak na priebeh „plánu“. Práca taktiež analyzuje idey „nahodilosti“ a „blúdenia“, prezentované niektorými literárnymi kritikmi, a konštatuje, že sú v rozpore s koncepciou „plánu“. Nepojednáva však len o tématickom, ale aj o formálnom aspekte diela – o konštrukcii príbehu, autorovom jazyku, či štýle a ich spojitosti s „plánom“.
