Music and Singing in Relation to Foreign Language Acquisition and Learning

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá vztah mezi hudbou a procesy osvojování a učení se cizího jazyka. Tato práce se pokoušela zjistit, zda mají zpěváci s hudebním vzděláním zvýšenou schopnost učit se cizí jazyk, v porovnání s hudebníky a lidmi bez hudebního vzdělání. Cílem práce bylo taktéž zjistit jaký vliv má zpěv písní, ať už doma nebo ve škole, na jazykové schopnosti respondentů. Výsledky studie byly získané pomocí dotazníku, který byl zveřejněný na internetu. Celkem bylo shromážděno 51 odpovědí, které byli následně analyzovány. Respondenti zodpověděli otázky zaměřené na své všeobecné vzdělání a hudební vzdělání. Taktéž uvedli svůj postoj k učení se anglického jazyka a k učení se anglického jazyka pomocí písní. Analýza odpovědí z dotazníku odhalila jen minmální rozdíly mezi zpěváky, zpěváky, kteří umí hrát na hudební nástroj, hudebníky a respondenty bez hudebního vzdělání. Většina respondentů uvedla, že co se angličtiny týče, jejich akademické výsledky byly výborné a jazykové dovednosti vysoké. Navzdory tomu, že výsledky neproukázaly významné rozdíly mezi skupinami respondentů, tato práce naznačuje, písně jsou významným pozitivním faktorem při učení se a osvojování anglického jazyka.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the relationship between music and foreign language acquisition and learning. It attempts to answer the question of whether singers with musical training demonstrate enhanced foreign-language-learning abilities as compared to musicians and non-musicians. It also explores how singing songs, both at home and in the classroom impacts those abilities. In order to reveal the relationship, a questionnaire was designed and posted on the Internet. Fifty-one answers were collected and analyzed. The respondents were asked to state their academic and musical backgrounds, attitudes towards learning the English language, and their relationship between singing and the use of songs and learning English. The answers of singers, singers with musical training, musicians and non-musicians were compared and contrasted. The results of the analysis indicate only minor differences between the groups of respondents. The majority of the answers show that the respondents’ academic results and their language proficiency in English were high. Although the differences identified between the groups were not pronounced, the findings suggest that songs appear to be an important positive factor in English language learning and acquisition.
