Attitude of the United Nations to the conflict in Rwanda

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá genocidou, která proběhla ve Rwandě v roce 1994 a postojem, který k problému zaujala Organizace spojených národů. První část práce se věnuje historii země, kde lze najít kořeny nevraživosti mezi kmeny Hutuů a Tutsiů. Stěžejní část práce je pak zaměřena na postoj Organizace spojených národů k tomuto konfliktu. Vedle misí, které OSN do Rwandy vyslala, jsou rozebrány i postoje vybraných členských zemí. V neposlední řadě se práce také zabývá otázkou, jestli mohla OSN při míře informací, kterými disponovala, vypuknutí genocidy zabránit.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issues of Rwandan genocide which took place in 1994 and also with the attitude of the UN to this problem. First part is devoted to history of the country, where the roots of hatred between Hutu and Tutsie are to be found. The crucial part of the thesis is focused on the attitude of the UN to this conflict. Attention is paid also to the missions which were sent to Rwanda by the UN and to the attitudes of choosen member states. Last but not least the thesis deals with the question whether the UN could prevent the genocide with the information they had at their disposal.
