The need of bridging the ELT gap between Pre-school and Primary school education

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá skutečností, že stále velmi malé množství dětí má možnost v rámci výuky cizích jazyků zažít kontinuální přestup mezi mateřskou a základní školou. Důvod napsání této práce byl primárně za účelem příspěvku do tohoto široce diskutovaného tématu. Teoretická část detailně pojednává o kurikulárním pozadí výuky cizích jazyků, které výrazně ovlivňuje situaci vzdělávání v České republice. Zároveň popisuje žáky mladšího školního věku, cílovou skupinu výzkumu, a způsob jakým se učí cizím jazykům. Práce současně věnuje pozornost učitelům a rolím, které by měli splňovat s respektem k výuce zaměřené na žáka. Následující praktická část je založena na čtyřech případových studiích, které jsou věnovány čtyřem žákům mladšího školního věku. Přestože tito žáci vzešli ze stejného bilingvního předškolního prostředí, již rok a půl navštěvují různé základní školy a dostává se jim tak různé vzdělávací péče. Především z tohoto důvodu se tento výzkum snaží analyzovat mnohé úhly pohledu na návaznost ve vzdělávání anglického jazyka. Počínaje žáky samotnými, rodiči, také učiteli a nezávislým pozorovatelem za účelem prokázání, zdali si tito žáci mohli kontinuálně osvojovat anglický jazyk, či byl tento proces narušen.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the fact that there are still not many children who have the chance to experience smooth and continuous process of transition in English language learning between pre-school and primary school. This thesis was mainly written in order to contribute to this widely discussed topic. The theoretical part focuses on the curricular background of teaching foreign languages which strongly affects the situation of the education in the Czech Republic. It also describes young learners, who are the target group of the research, and the way they learn languages. The thesis also pays attention to teachers and roles they should fulfil to respect the learner centred approach. The following practical part is based on four case studies which are devoted to four young learners. Even though they came from the same bilingual pre-school background, they have been already for a year and a half attending different primary schools with various educational cares. Mainly for that reason, the research tries to analyse several points of view on the continuity in ELT. Starting from the learners themselves as well as parents, teachers and an independent observer in order to prove whether these children could continuously acquire the English language or whether this process was disrupted.
