Churches, Modern Media and Public Relations: an Example of Catholic Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na interpretaci vztahu náboženství a moderních prostředků masové komunikace s důrazem na situaci v České republice a s přihlédnutím k historickému i celosvětovému kontextu. Tento vztah je podrobně popsán na příkladu katolické církve reprezentující tradiční náboženská uskupení a Církve Ježíše Krista Svatých posledních dnů, která v našich podmínkách představuje minoritní náboženskou organizaci, s níž mnozí spojují pejorativní označení {\clqq}sekta``. Cílem práce je vysvětlit a problematizovat způsob, jakým se tyto dva směry přizpůsobují a zároveň vymezují proti situaci v současné společnosti, která je stále více ovlivňována mediální realitou. První, teoretická část práce stručně uvádí do problematiky moderních komunikačních prostředků a praxe public relations. V souvislosti s rozvojem médií jsou zde také naznačeny změny v moderní západní společnosti (sekularizace, pluralismus, globalizace), které ovlivnily postavení náboženství v postmoderní době. Teoretická část se především zaměřuje na celkovou charakteristikou katolické církve a Církve Ježíše Krista Svatých posledních dnů ve vztahu k médiím, s přihlédnutím k historii a společenské pozici těchto církví. Druhá, praktická část se věnuje srovnání mediálního obrazu katolické církve a Církve Ježíše Krista Svatých posledních dnů na základě analýzy článků, které vyšly po roce 1989 v českém tisku.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the interpretation of the relations between religion and modern means of mass communication stressing the situation in the Czech Republic and taking account of historical and global context as well. These relations are described in detail on an example of the Catholic Church representing traditional religious groups and the Church of the Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints which represents one of the minority religious groups in local circumstances. Many see this as a ``destructive cult{\crqq}, though. The aim of the thesis is to explain the way in which these streams accept the society and at the same time it delimits against the situation in the modern society as it is gradually influenced by media reality. The first {--} theoretic {--} part of the thesis introduces the problems of modern means of communication and public relations practice in a simple way. It also indicates changes, which influenced the role of religion in the post-modernist era in modern western society (secularisation, pluralism, globalisation). The theoretic part focuses mostly on overall characteristic of the Catholic Church and the Church of the Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints in relation to the media taking account of the historical context and the social role of these Churches. The second {--} pragmatic {--} part devotes to comparison of the media image of the Catholic Church and the Church of the Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints. The comparison is based on analysis of articles published in the Czech press after 1989.
