An analysis of populist attitudes using SEM models

Abstract:

Tato závěrečná práce se zabývá otázku, jak vypadají voliči populistických stran. A tím pochopit jejich nedávné volební úspěchy. K vyjádření kauzálního vztahu je využito strukturální modelování. Tyto modely jsou populární v sociálních a~behaviorálních vědách a odhadují příčinnou souvislost mezi pozorovanými a~latentními proměnnými. Abych dokázala odpovědět na tuto otázku, zaměřuji se na dvě populistické strany: Svoboda a přímá demokracie z České republiky a z Německa Alternative für Deutschland. V prvním kroku jsou definovány čtyři modely, které jsou následně modifikovány. Jejich úprava spočívá buď změnou dat (na jednotlivé státy) nebo je k modifikaci využitý modifikační index. Výsledky z těchto modelů ukazují, že neexistuje faktor, který spojuje voliče populistických stran.

Abstract:

In this paper, I investigate the character of people who vote for a populist party. My goal is to understand their success during the recent elections. I have used structural equations modeling to express the causal relationship. These models are popular in the social and behavioral field of science and are used to estimate the causal relationship between the subjects and latent variables. I focus on two populist parties in this paper in particular: „Svoboda a přímá demokracie“ from Czech Republic and „Alternative für Deutschland“ from Germany. At the beginning there are three models defined. Then I work with these models and I~modify them either by changing the data (to reflect particular regions) or I use modification index. Based on the model results we can see that the factor, which would connect the voters of populistic parties, does not exist.
