The Humour of the Jára Cimrman Theatre - in the Czech original and selected English translations

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá specifičností humoru Divadla Járy Cimrmana, možnostmi jeho překladu a využitím těchto překladů v jazykové výuce. Cílem je poskytnout srovnání překladatelských postupů vybraných autorů a posoudit jejich vzdělávací potenciál. Zaměřujeme se zde na překlad hry Záskok autorské dvojice Emílie Machalové a Briana Stewarta z divadelního souboru Cimrman English Theatre, dále na překlady dramat Záskok a Dobytí severního pólu Andrewa Robertse a Dobytí severního pólu v překladu Craiga Cravense. Prostřednictvím metod literární komparatistiky a analýzy překladu jsme představili tři odlišné překladatelské postupy. Výsledky provedených rozborů a komparace poukazují na skutečnost, že překlad Machalové a Stewarta lze považovat za vhodnější pro příjemce znalé českého literárního kontextu a historických mezníků. Andrew Roberts a Craig Cravens volí obdobné postupy a zaměřují se více na pravděpodobné znalosti zahraničního příjemce překladu, jemuž českou kulturu představují více v poznámkách pod čarou. Zjištění plynoucí z této práce umožňují učitelům učinit informovaný výběr vhodného překladu s ohledem na podmínky konkrétní třídy.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis concentrates on the specificity of the Jára Cimrman Theatre humour, the possibilities of its translation and the usage of said translations in language teaching. The aim is to provide a comparison of the individual approaches to selected authors' translations and to investigate the translations' didactic potential. We emphasise the translations by Emília Machalová and Brian Stewart from the theatre ensemble called Cimrman English Theatre. Furthermore, we analyse Andrew Roberts' translations of the plays The Stand-in as well as The Conquest of the North Pole and Craig Cravens' translation of The Conquest of the North Pole. Deploying methods of literary comparison and analysis, we have presented three different translational approaches. The results provided by said methods imply that Machalová and Stewart's translation appears more suitable for recipients already acquainted with Czech literary context and historical milestones. Andrew Roberts and Craig Cravens choose similar methods and concentrate to a greater extent on the probable knowledge of foreign recipients of their translations. The authors thus clarify general Czech background in a multitude of footnotes. The findings of this thesis allow teachers to make informed decisions in choosing the most suitable translation for the conditions of a specific classroom.
