Comparing the Quality of Translations of Specialised Texts Depending on the Translators' Level of Expertise

Abstract:

Záměrem diplomové práce bylo zjistit, zda se liší kvalita překladů odborných textů v závislosti na odborných znalostech překladatele. Pro účely práce byly vybrány tři krátké texty z oboru informační technologie, financí a automobilového průmyslu. Každý text byl přeložen profesionálními překladateli, profesionály z oboru a studenty překladatelství. V jednotlivých textech byly definovány tzv. Rich Points (překladatelské problémy) ze tří různých kategorií. Na základě kvantitativní metody Přijatelnosti (method of Acceptability), která byla převzata z praktického výzkumu skupiny PACTE, byly vymezené překladatelské problémy zanalyzovány a vyhodnoceny. Mnohá řešení vybraných Rich Points byla na závěr rozebrána a prodiskutována. Prostřednictvím dotazníku, který skupina PACTE nazvala Questionnaire on Translation about Knowledge, bylo zjištěno, zda se jednotlivé skupiny staví k překladu spíše staticky nebo dynamicky. Aby se přístupy jednotlivých překladatelů ověřily v praxi, byly v jednotlivých překladech vyhledávány dynamické a statické prvky. Na závěr byl zhodnocen i vliv dynamičnosti na kvalitu překladů. Pozornost byla věnována také celkovému času překladu a jeho vlivu na kvalitu. Pomocí dalšího dotazníku (Questionnaire on Translation Problems) byly získány základní informace o překladatelském procesu jednotlivých skupin, ale také doplňující informace týkající se nejen překladu konkrétního textu.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the quality of specialised translations in relation to the different level of a translator´s expertise. Short texts from the fields of information technology, automotive industry and finance were translated by three different subject groups – expert translators, professionals working in the relevant field of expertise and students of a translation program. A number of translation problems (Rich Points) from different categories were selected in each text and assessed based on the quantitative method of Acceptability that was taken over from the PACTE Group. Certain Rich Points that seemed to be problematic in majority of translations were addressed and discussed. Another objective was to figure out whether the translation approach of subject groups tend to be rather static or dynamic and if translators with more dynamic approach produce higher quality translations. Information on dynamism was gathered by means of a Questionnaire on Knowledge about Translation which was also borrowed from the PACTE Group. Subsequently, results were tested on individual translations to see if the approach is applied in real as well. In the end, the degree of dynamism was compared with quality. I also paid attention to the total translating time and its impact on the overall quality. The Questionnaire on Translation Problems helped me to get an insight into the translation process of each participant and obtain complementing information not only about translating the specific text.
