Current Linguistic Situation in Switzerland

Abstract:

The topic of the present Bachelor thesis is the current language situation in multilingual Switzerland, focusing on the contemporary linguistic situation of this country. First of all, we will focus on language policy in general and introduce the language regions and all four language groups - German, French, Italian and Romansh. Furthermore, we will present the relationship of individual language areas and at the same time, we will look at the relationship between individual languages in specific Swiss cantons. Three cantons, out of the total number of 26, are bilingual, and the canton Grisons is even trilingual. We will find out what language prejudices occur within the Swiss Confederation and we will explain the concept Röstigraben. Another section of the thesis will be devoted to multilingualism in specific situations: the current situation in education, what language pupils learn as their first, and whether it is true that everyone can speak all four official languages and on top of that English which is nowadays absolutely necessary. We will also take a closer look at the situation in the judiciary and when in contact with the authorities. Finally, we will have a look at several cases of the Swiss multilingualism in everyday life.

Abstract:

Le sujet de notre mémoire de licence est la situation linguistique actuelle dans la Confédération suisse, qui se focalisera principalement sur la situation linguistique actuelle dans ce pays. Tout d'abord, en général, nous nous concentrerons sur la politique linguistique avec en introduction les régions linguistiques et tous les quatres groupes linguistiques- germanophones, francophones, italophones et romanchophones. Nous présenterons la relation des langues individuelles et en m?me temps nous examinerons la relation entre les langues dans les cantons suisses concrets, parce que parmi les 26 cantons, il y a trois cantons bilingues et un canton, le canton des Grisons, est m?me trilingue. Nous découvrirons quels sont les préjugés linguistiques bien implantés dans les esprits des habitants de la Confédération suisse. Dans la partie suivante, nous nous orienterons vers le multilinguisme dans les situations spécifiques. Comment on effectue l'enseignement, quelle langues les él?ves apprennent comme langue maternelle et est-ce qu'il est vrai quetout le monde sait parler tous les quatre langues officielles et en plus l'anglais, qui est aujourd?hui indispensable dans la vie. Finalement, on présentera la situation dans le syst?me judiciaire et dans relations administratives. Et nous montrerons plusieurs cas de plurilinguisme suisse dans la vie quotidienne.
