The economic motivation of the United States to participate in the economic recovery of Europe in 1947

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje procesu vytváření a prosazování myšlenky amerického Plánu obnovy Evropy, známého spíše jako Marshallův plán, a jeho motivacím. Po 2. světové válce Spojené státy prostřednictvím Trumanovy doktríny opouštějí tradiční izolacionistický přístup k Evropě a angažují se v její hospodářské obnově a v zastavení vzestupu komunistické ideologie na kontinentě. Spojené státy Evropě nabízejí podporu jednotného plánu, který na základě analýz jednotlivých ekonomik vypracují samy účastnické státy. Plán je nabídnut všem evropským státům, ale po odmítnutí Sovětského svazu a jeho satelitů se jej účastní pouze 16 států včetně západních zón poraženého Německa. Spojené státy požadují maximální spolupráci mezi účastnickými státy, zapojení všech jejich dostupných zdrojů a kapacit a absolutní kontrolu nad prostředky, které USA poskytnou tam, kde evropské zdroje nepostačují. Vytvoření plánu je motivováno především zajištěním národní bezpečnosti Spojených států, ohrožované sílícím vlivem komunismu, zajištěním hospodářské stability americké ekonomiky a humanitárními aspekty.

Abstract:

Thesis focuses on the process of creating and promoting the idea of the American Recovery Plan in Europe, better known as the Marshall Plan, and its motivations. After the Second World War, the United States, through Truman's doctrine, abandoned the traditional isolationist approach in Europe and engage in its economic recovery, and the halt of the communist ideology on the continent. The United States offers support for this unified plan for Europe, that will be based on analyzes of individual economies developed by the participating countries themselves. The plan is offered to all European states, but only 16 states, including the western zones of the defeated Germany, participate after the rejection of the Soviet Union and its satellites. United States requested the maximum cooperation between all of the participated states, including the involvement of all their available resources and capacities and absolute control over the resources that the United States will provide, where European resources are insufficient. The creation of the plan is motivated primarily by securing the national security of the United States, threatened by the increasing communist influence, and the economic stability of the US economy and humanitarian aspects.
