Presidential Rhetoric – Experimental Research of Priming in Politics

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá původně psychologickým efektem zvaným priming a jeho přesahem do politického světa. Cílem práce je objasnit, nakolik může být důležité to, co a jak politik říká a jak se jeho rétorika projevuje na našem vnímání a následném hodnocení veřejných představitelů. Teorie primingu, rozsáhle zmapována především díky řadě praktických experimentálních studií, tvrdí, že rétorickým upozorněním na konkrétní politická témata a ignorováním ostatním disponuje politik schopností ovlivňovat kritéria a standardy, podle kterých jej lidé hodnotí. V práci je tato teze nejprve podrobně představena právě prostřednictvím řady zahraničních studií, a to i ve vztahu k možným faktorům, jež mohou tento efekt ovlivňovat, a následně je za pomocí vlastního experimentálního výzkumu testována na studentském vzorku. Tento výzkum k testování primingu využívá fiktivní projev prezidenta Miloše Zemana, kdy zkoumáme, nakolik poslech tohoto projevu ovlivnil způsob, jakým účastníci prezidenta hodnotí. Vůbec poprvé je tak představená teorie ověřena v českém politickém prostředí.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the originally psychological effect called priming and its influence on political reality. The aim of the thesis is to explain how can be important what and how a politician says and how his rhetoric is reflected in our perception and the subsequent evaluation of our public representatives. Priming theory, extensively mapped through a number of practical experimental researches, claims that calling attention to some matters while ignoring others, politicians themselves influence the standards by which governments, presidents, policies, and candidates for public office are judged. Firstly we focus on the priming theory presented in a number of empirical studies and then we examine this theory on a student sample by using our own experimental research. This research to testing priming uses the fictional speech of the Czech president Miloš Zeman and examines how much the listening of the speech has influenced the manner in which participants evaluated the president. The presented theory is therefore for the first time verified in the Czech political environment.
