'More Human(e) than Human' and the Designing of Blade Runner

Anotace:

Tato práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat koncept lidskosti a sílu filmového designu tak, jak jsou vyobrazeny ve filmu Blade Runner Ridleyho Scotta. Skrze analýzu filmových postav z hlediska filozofie Martina Heideggera práce identifikuje vlastnosti Bytosti a překládá tezi o možnosti rozšíření těchto charakteristik i na uměle vytvořená vědomí. Následně analýza symbolismu a filmových technik poukazuje na postupy, jimiž se zprostředkovává význam a jež ovlivňují mysl diváků. Tyto dvě oblasti jsou zkoumány s ohledem na pozadí filmu, v rámci jeho vztahu k žánrům science fiction a filmu noir.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to examine the concept of humanity as a virtue and the power of film design as portrayed in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Through the analysis of the film characters in terms of Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, the thesis identifies the attributes of a Being and proposes that these characteristics may be extended to artificial minds. Subsequently, the analysis of the symbolism and cinematographic techniques points out the strategies that are used to mediate the meaning and impact the minds of the spectators. The two areas of inquiry are explored in regard to the film’s background, reflecting its connection to the genres of science fiction and film noir.
