Collaboration of Viktor Šulc and František Tröster in SND (1934-1937)

Abstract:

I devoted my time to Czech theatre director Victor Šulc in my bachelor essay who since 1932 had actively performed in Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. He studied under Leopold Jessner, a well known German expressionist director of that time. Šulc is gradually leaving this influence and with the arrival of Scenographic designer Frantisek Tröster to Slovak National Theatre in 1934 a new unique theatre style of the Synthetic theatre is created. Main attention here is concentrated around the actor and his/her action. The rest of the theatre compositions become its support and at the same time they cooperate with it so the words of the author stand out on the stage. Work with light on the stage, which was able to divide the space and showed the atmosphere, was Tröster’s strong and main ability of his art creation. Actor’s action accentuated the space, which was indicative, defining every detail. Both Šulc and Tröster were committed to their play and on the stage they tried to reflect negative conditions of that time (Nazi occupation). In 1937 their mutual work for Slovak National Theatre is finished. Both artists are considered to be founders of Modern Slovakian theatre tradition.

Abstract:

Ako téma pre svoju bakalársku prácu som si zvolil prácu českého režiséra Viktora Šulca v Slovenskom národnom divadle, ktorý v ňom aktívne pôsobil od roku 1932. Bol študentom známeho nemeckého expresionistického režiséra Leopolda Jessnera. Šulc postupne opúšťa jeho vplyv a s príchodom scénografa Františka Tröstera do Slovenského národného divadla, vytvárajú unikátny štýl syntetického divadla. Hlavná pozornosť je v ňom zameraná na hereckú akciu. Ostatné divadelné zložky sa stávajú jej podporou v celkovom vyznení a rovnako zdôrazňujú slovo dramatika. Hlavná pozornosť v Trösterovej tvorbe je zameraná na prácu zo svetlom, ktoré vyznačuje priestor a navodzuje žiadanú atmosféru. Herecká akcia tiež definuje priestor a tvorí s ním symbiózu. Šulc s Trösterom vo svojej tvorbe poukazovali na negatívne aspekty spoločenského života (hrozba nacizmu) a snažili sa ich reflektovať na javisku. Ich spoločná spolupráca v Slovenskom národnom divadle sa končí v roku 1937. Obaja sú považovaný za zakladateľov modernej slovenskej divadelnej tradície.
