Effect of the elevation gradient on the growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the climatic conditions of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Měnící se klima posouvá fenologii i dynamiku růstu stromů nejen v mírném pásmu, ovšem zatím je jen málo informací o tom, jak oteplování mění model růstu a jak tyto změny ovlivní produkci a s ní úzce spjatou absorpci uhlíku. Současné porozumění těmto vlivům je stále velmi omezené, včetně jejich směru (příznivý nebo nepříznivý) a geografické distribuce. Aby byla tato informační mezera vyplněna, byla analyzována data růstu z vysokopřesných automatických dendrometrů z let 2020 (teplý a vlhký rok), 2021 (normální rok), 2022 (teplý a suchý rok) u lesnicky významného druhu borovice lesní (Pinus sylvestris) v České republice napříč výškovým gradientem. Probíhalo pozorování růstové fenologie, dynamiky a produkce nadzemní biomasy, dále byly porovnávány meziroční změny začátku, konce a celkové délky vegetační sezóny pomocí lineární regrese. Naměřená data potvrdila hypotézu, že s nadmořskou výškou se zkrátí vegetační sezóna, kvůli vyšším srážkám a nižší teplotě. Naopak neočekávané chování borovice ukázala ve velikosti celkového přírůstu, který byl napříč výškovým gradientem podobný. Během kratší vegetační sezóny stihla vyprodukovat podobné množství biomasy díky vyšší maximální rychlosti růstu, která stoupala s nadmořskou výškou, pravděpodobně díky lepším klimatickým podmínkám v průběhu nejrychlejšího růstu. Výsledky ukázaly, že s teplejším počasím během teplých let se prodlužila vegetační sezóna, fenologie se posunula dříve k jaru, nástupu vegetační sezóny v horkém roce 2020 byl významně dříve, v ukončení růstu na podzim nebyly pozorovány mezi lety žádné výrazné rozdíly. Avšak prodloužení sezony ani vyšší úroveň stresu neměla u borovice lesní významný efekt na velikost přírůstu.

Abstract:

The changing climate is shifting the phenology and growth dynamics of trees, not only in temperate regions but there is little information on how warming is changing growth patterns and how these changes will affect production and the closely related carbon uptake. Current understanding of these effects is still very limited, including their direction (favourable or unfavourable) and geographical distribution. To fill this information gap, growth data from high-precision automatic dendrometers from 2020 (hot and wet year), 2021 (normal year), 2022 (hot and dry year) were analysed for the forestry important species Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in the Czech Republic across the altitudinal gradient. Observations of growth phenology, dynamics, and aboveground biomass production were made, and interannual changes in the beginning, end, and total length of the growing season were compared using linear regression. The measured data confirmed the hypothesis that the growing season shortens with altitude, due to higher precipitation and lower temperature. Conversely, pine showed unexpected behavior in the magnitude of total increment, which was similar across the elevation gradient. It was able to produce a similar amount of biomass during the shorter growing season due to a higher maximum growth rate that increased with elevation, likely due to better climatic conditions during the fastest growth period. The results showed that with warmer weather during the hot years, the growing season lengthened, phenology shifted earlier towards spring, the onset of the growing season in the hot year 2020 was significantly earlier, and no significant differences were observed between years in the termination of growth in autumn. However, the lengthening season and higher stress levels did not have a significant effect on growth size in lodgepole pine.
