The Principle of Depersonalisation: The White Ribbon by Michael Haneke

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on Michael Haneke´s movie The White Ribbon (Das weisse Band – Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte, 2009). With the intention to analyse this movie the neoformalist concept of analysis of Thomas Bordwell and Kristin Thompson was presented in the first part. The essential goal of neoformalist analysis is to find and analyse the main principle which permeates the movie on all levels – narrative, stylistic and thematic. As the dominant of The White Ribbon was identified the principle of depersonalisation which was defined as alienation of individual´s emotional and cognitive processes. This principle was demonstrated on various levels of the movie. It is possible to ascribe the dominant not only to the levels of the movie it shares characteristics also with the materials which were used for the promotion of the movie. Watching the trailer and the poster makes the viewers also observing their feelings and thoughts. The neoformalist approach to film analysis was integrated with the phenomenological concept of Vivian Sobchack. Carnal comprehension that is happening before the conscious elaboration of what is being seen in the film is very important for the filmic experience by The White Ribbon.

Abstract:

Cieľom práce bolo analyzovať film Biela stuha (Das weisse Band – Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte, 2009) Michaela Hanekeho. V prvej časti sme predstavili neoformalistický koncept analýzy Kristin Thompsonovej a Davida Bordwella. Základným cieľom neoformalistickej analýzy je nájsť a vysvetliť základný princíp, ktorý dielo charakterizuje na všetkých úrovniach – naratívnej, štylistickej a tematickej. Za dominantu Bielej stuhy bol označený princíp depersonalizácie, ktorý sme charakterizovali ako pocit odcudzenia vlastných emocionálnych a kognitívnych procesov. V propagačných materiáloch k filmu sme tiež našli prvky, ktoré zdieľali charakteristiky s princípom depersonalizácie. Neoformalistický koncept analýzy sme integrovali s fenomenologickým prístupom Vivian Sobchackovej. Telesné porozumenie filmu, ktoré sa odohráva ešte pred vedomým spracovaním toho, čo sa deje na plátne, je pri sledovaní Bielej stuhy veľmi dôležité.
