Social Anthropology in the Czech Republic: The Relationship with Národopis

Abstract:

Diplomová bakalářská práce se zabývá vztahem antropologie a národopisem v České republice. Tento vztah je rozkrýván na základě analýzy dokumentů. Hledání povahy vztahu antropologie k národopisu a jeho prezentace v dokumentech jsou uspořádány chronologicky. Putování začíná v meziválečném Československu, kde je možné najít zárodek české sociální antropologie v podobě prvních knih věnujících se antropologické tematice. Vztah antropologie k národopisu po roce 1989 je analyzován zejména na základě čtyř diskuzí publikovaných v časopisech Český lid, Umění a řemesla a Sociologický časopis. Z každé diskuze je vybráno několik momentů, které poukazují na problematičnost vztahu k národopisu. Vymezování se vůči němu na jedné straně a publikace antropologických textů v etnologických (národopisných) časopisech na straně druhé je jen jedním z míst, které se stávají třecí plochou. V novém, možná nečekaném světle, se pak tento specifický a do značné míry ambivalentní vztah ukazuje v rozboru tak zvané revoluce à la Malinowski, která je považována za zrod moderní sociální antropologie. Právě prvky tehdy silně rozvinuté středoevropské etnografie (důraz na zachycení kultury jako celku a silný důraz na empirický přístup), se později staly jedním z pilířů Malinowskeho funkcionalistické obratu v antropologii.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis deals with the relationship of anthropology to národopis in the Czech Republic. Uncovering the relationship is based on an analysis of documents. Finding the nature of the relationship of anthropology to ethnography and its presentation in the documents are arranged chronologically. “Journey” begins in interwar Czechoslovakia, where you can find the germ of the Czech Social Anthropology in the form of the first books devoted to the topic of anthropolgy. The relationship to národopis since 1989 is analysed in four debates published in journals Český lid, Umění a řemesla and Sociologický časopis. For each discussion is chosen few moments to highlight the problematic relationship to národopis. Challenges to him on one side and publication of anthropological texts in ethnological (národopisných) magazines, is just one of the places that have become areas of disagreement. In a new, perhaps unexpected light, shows this specific and largely ambivalent relationship the analysis of so-called revolution à la Malinowski. These are precisely the elements had a strong Central European ethnography (emphasis on the recognition of culture as a whole and the strong emphasis on empirical approach), which later became one of the pillars Malinowskeho turnover functionalist anthropology.
