Educational mobility of first-generation university students

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem vzdělanostní mobility první generace vysokoškolských studentů. Cílem práce je optikou vysokoškoláka první generace v rodině s nižším vzděláním nahlédnout na jeho vlastní vzdělávací dráhu v souvislosti s prožitím vzestupné vzdělanostní mobility. Teoretická část práce vymezuje terminologii vzdělanostní reprodukce a mobility a sociokulturního kapitálu a dává je do souvislosti se vzdělávací dráhou vysokoškoláka první generace. Bylo uskutečněno osm rozhovorů narativního charakteru, ve kterém respondenti vyprávěli svůj životní příběh a sdíleli zkušenosti související s postupem školním systémem. Prezentace výsledků výzkumu představuje šest témat, která popisují souvislosti i odlišnosti mezi osobními zkušenostmi jednotlivých studentů první generace, včetně identifikace přínosů, výzev a překážek v rámci procesu vzdělanostní mobility.

Abstract:

The master's thesis deals with the topic of educational mobility of first-generation university students coming from lower-educated families. Through the lens of a first-generation college student in a lower-educated family, the thesis aims to look at their own educational trajectory in relation to experiencing upward educational mobility. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the terminology of educational mobility and socio-cultural capital and puts them in the context of the educational trajectory of a first-generation university student. Eight narrative interviews were conducted in which respondents shared their life stories and experiences related to their progression through the school system. The research findings present six themes that describe the connections and differences between the personal experiences of individual first-generation students, including the identification of benefits, challenges, and barriers to educational mobility.
