Development of the Position of the Third Person Possessive Pronouns in the Nominal Phrase - A Corpus-based Study

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce je příspěvkem k tématu slovosledu nominální fráze v diachronním pohledu. Zabývá se vývojem slovosledu posesivních zájmen 3. osoby v nominální frázi mezi 14.–19. stoletím. Jejím primárním cílem je analýza slovosledu zájmen v rámci korpusové sondy v korpusu Diakorp v6. Sekundárním cílem je popis vlastností a omezení korpusu Diakorp pro podobná diachronní zkoumání. Úvodní kapitoly zpracovávají teoretická východiska práce: vymezení nominální fráze, teorii slovosledu a popis zkoumaných posesiv. V následující metodologické části je kladen důraz na charakteristiku korpusu, zejména na jeho složení a specifika, mimo jiné také v porovnání se synchronními korpusy. V ústřední části jsou představeny výsledky korpusové sondy. Tyto jsou opatřeny komentářem k jejich souladu s literaturou a jejich případné ovlivněnosti zvolenou metodou. Práce potvrzuje dosavadní poznatky o vývoji slovosledu nominální fráze a nastiňuje jak možnosti dalších zkoumání, tak i limity podobných korpusových sond.

Abstract:

The present Bachelor thesis contributes to the understanding of the word order of the noun phrase from a diachronic perspective. The subject of this thesis is the word order of third-person possessive pronouns in a simple noun phrase and its development from the 14th to the 19th century. the thesis aims to provide the reader with results of a corpus study of this phenomenon in the Diakorp v6 corpus. The secondary objective is to investigate features and limitations of the Diakorp corpus for similar diachronic studies. The opening chapters discuss the theoretical background of the thesis: the definition of nominal phrases, the theory of word order, and the description of the examined possessives. The following (methodological) passages concentrate on the characteristics of the corpus, especially its composition and specifics, also in comparison with synchronic corpora. the core part presents the results of the corpus probes. These are accompanied by a discussion of their consistency with the literature and their possible dependence on the chosen method. The thesis confirms the existing findings on the development of the word order of the noun phrase and outlines both the possibilities for further investigation and the limits of similar corpus studies.
