Marriage stability predictors in the ELSPAC study

Abstract:

The study deals with the prediction of marital stability in longitudinal project ELSPAC (European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood). The goal of the study is to explore the relevance of some predictors of divorce. By the analyses of discrete time hazard models, I focused on questions: if the marital couple divorce (and when) and which predictors are important in this prediction of divorce. The sample consisted of 2155 Czech and Slovak women (from 17 to 46 years old), in the first marriage, participating on longitudinal project of ELSPAC between 1991-20002. I chose the particular predictor on the basis of Vulnerability-stress-adaptation model and also on the basis of others relevant theories of marital stability. I measured this variable by scale used in the study of ELSPAC. The study found that predictors of vulnerability (age at marriage, and wedding before 19 years old) are significant predictors of divorce. The influence of some other predictor such as divorce of parents or cohabitation before marriage may be moderated or mediated by another control variable such as level of education, number of children, and length of marriage. Also the amount of life (stressful) events was significant predictor of divorce. The study also supported the relevance of several variable of marital interaction: positive and negative interaction, frequency of conflict and in partly also the perception of partner´s behaviour. Not only the overall level of marital satisfaction, but also the decline of satisfaction was significant predictor of divorce. The results did not support the hypothesis about interaction between particular predictors (stressful event, marital interaction, satisfaction) and length of marriage. The study suggest that not only demographic but also relationship variables are relevant for prediction of divorce in Czech background.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá predikciou manželskej stability v longitudinálnom projekte ELSPAC (Európska longitudinálna štúdia tehotenstva a detstva). Cieľom štúdie bolo overiť relevanciu vybraných prediktorov rozvodu, pričom som sa prostredníctvom analýzy diskrétneho modelu hazardu zaoberala otázkami: či sa daný manželský pár rozvedie ( a kedy), a ktoré premenné sú relevantne pri predikcii tohto rozvodu. Vzorku výskumu tvorilo 2155 žien vo veku od 17 do 46 rokov, českej a slovenskej národnosti participujúcich na projekte ELSPAC v rokoch 1991-2002, ktoré boli na začiatku výskumu v prvom manželstve. Pri výbere konkrétnych prediktorov som vychádzala z Modelu vulnerability- stresu a adaptácie ako aj z prehľadu iných relevantných modelov manželskej stability a k ich meraniu používam škály štúdie ELSPAC. Výskum zistil, že prediktory vulnerability (vek uzavretia manželstva, svadba pred 19 rokom života) sú signifikantnými prediktormi rozvodu, pričom pôsobenie niektorých ďalších prediktor ako rozvod rodičov či spolužitie pred manželstvom môže byť sprostredkované kontrolovanými premennými ako je dĺžka manželstva, vzdelanie, či počet detí. Taktiež množstvo životných (stresujúcich) udalosti, ktoré respondentka zažívala bolo signifikantným prediktorom rozvodu. Výskum podporil aj relevanciu viacerých premenných manželskej interakcie: pozitívnej a negatívnej interakcie a hádok, a z časti aj vnímania partnerovho správania. Pri prediktore spokojnosti výskum zistil, že nie len celková miery spokojnosti, ale aj jej pokles sú signifikantné prediktory rozvodu. Hypotézy o interakcii vybraných prediktorov (spokojnosti , manželskej interakcie a stresových situácii) s dĺžkou manželstva na predikciu rozvodu neboli podporené. Výskum tak poukazuje na relevanciu viacerých nie len demografických, ale aj vzťahových premenných pre predikciu rozvodu v českom prostredí.
