Update of teaching materials about QGIS plugins

Abstract:

QGIS je v současnosti jedním z nejrozšířenějších bezplatných open source geografických informačních systémů. Základní funkcionalita programu je rozšiřována pomocným softwarem, tzv. zásuvnými moduly neboli pluginy. Cílem této bakalářské práce je vyhodnocení nejvíce používaných pluginů QGIS a vytvoření interaktivní osnovy o zvolených nejvíce používaných pluginech do předmětu Z8149 Alternativní GIS – volně dostupné programy a data. Výběr pluginů byl založen na výsledcích průzkumu počtu stažení a uživatelského hodnocení pluginů na oficiálních webových stránkách QGIS, průzkumu jejich praktického použití v odborných článcích, závěrečných pracích a četnosti zmiňování pluginů na uživatelských fórech a webových blozích. Pro tvorbu výukové interaktivní osnovy jsou vybrány pluginy: mmqgis, qgis2web, Qgis2threejs a Profile Tool. V interaktivní osnově je obecně představen program QGIS a jeho pluginy, včetně postupu jejich stažení a instalace. Poté následuje konkrétní popis nastavení vybraných pluginů a jejich dílčích funkcí a nástrojů. Interaktivní osnova obsahuje také úkoly pro studenty k jednotlivým pluginům. Vytvořená interaktivní osnova byla otestována ve výuce. Výsledky provedeného testování interaktivní osnovy, resp. výsledky vypracovaných úloh a zpětná vazba od studentů, dokazují, že interaktivní osnova je srozumitelná a vhodná pro výuku. Na základě výsledků testování byly v interaktivní osnově provedeny drobné úpravy, které zlepšují kvalitu výukových materiálů.

Abstract:

QGIS is currently one of the most widely used free and open source geographic information systems. The basic functionality of the program is extended by auxiliary software, so-called plugins. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate the most commonly used QGIS plugins and create an interactive syllabus of the chosen most frequently used plugins for the subject Z8149 Alternative GIS – freely available programs and data. Based on the survey of the top downloads plugins and user ratings of the plugins on the official QGIS website, the survey of their practical use in professional articles, final theses, and the frequency of mentioning plugins on user forums and blogs, some of the most downloaded, top rated (popular) and most commonly used plugins are selected for creating the educational interactive syllabus: mmqgis, qgis2web, Qgis2threejs, and Profile Tool. The interactive syllabus generally introduces the QGIS program and its plugins, describes the plugins download and installation process and provides specific descriptions of the settings of the selected plugins and their individual functions/tools. The interactive syllabus also contains homework for each plugin. The created interactive syllabus is tested in the official teaching. The results of the testing of the interactive syllabus, i.e., the results of the completed homeworks and the feedback from students, demonstrate that the interactive syllabus is understandable and suitable for teaching. Based on the results of the testing, only minor deficiencies in the interactive syllabus are corrected, these changes ensure an overall improvement of the teaching materials.
