Specifying stand transpiration based on measurement of the tree transpiration flow

Abstract:

This thesis treatise on one of the most important components of the water balance – transpiration. It is mainly focusing on the extrapolation from the tree measurements to stand with the link to some of the uncertainties and errors that might occur while upscaling. I used the Thermal Tree Balance (THB) method to measure sap flow in trees in a mature spruce forest and a beech monoculture, both under montane conditions, for four years, 2017-2020. The extrapolation was based on calculating the distribution of sap flow in the basal area classes with upscaling procedures to determine the stand transpiration (E) concerning the four scaling periods. One estimate of E was based on a simple relationship between the number of trees and average sap flow. I evaluated 22 linear and nonlinear models. The simple ratio upscaling method almost always had higher absolute daily values compared to the other four estimates of E, but without statistical significance for both stand within a year. Beech was not sensitive to environmental conditions in the choice of scaling period for extrapolation to stand E. All beech E estimates showed similar coefficients of determination compared to ET (0.71-0.88). For spruce, a drought occurred annually. Spruce E was 43% and 39% of ET in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The choice of scaling period was evident in the wettest year, 2020 when seasonal precipitation reached 1098 mm. Seasonal ET accounted for 50% of E on average. All spruce forest E estimates showed coefficients of determination similar in 2017 and 2018, compared to ET, but very low in 2019 and 2020.

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o jedné z nejdůležitějších složek vodní bilance - transpiraci. Zaměřuje se především na tok mízy měřený ve stromech a jeho extrapolaci na porost v souvislostech s některými nejistotami a chybami, které mohou při upscalingu nastat. Pro měření průtoku mízy stromů ve vzrostlém smrkovém lese a v bukové monokultuře, obojí v horských podmínkách, jsem použila metodu tepelné bilance pletiv (THB), pro čtyři roky 2017-2020. Extrapolace byla založena na výpočtu rozložení toku mízy ve třídách výčetní kruhové základny s postupy upscalingu pro určení transpirace porostu (E) s ohledem na čtyři škálovací období. Jeden odhad E byl založen na jednoduchém poměru mezi počtem stromů a průměrným průtokem mízy. Vyhodnotila jsem 22 lineárních a nelineárních modelů. Metoda jednoduchého poměru upscalingu měla téměř vždy vyšší absolutní denní hodnoty ve srovnání s ostatními čtyřmi odhady E, ale bez statistické významnosti pro oba porosty v rámci jednoho roku. Buk nebyl citlivý na podmínky prostředí při volbě škálovacího období pro extrapolaci na porostní E. Všechny odhady E buku vykazovaly podobné koeficienty determinace ve srovnání s ET (0.71-0.88). U smrku se každoročně vyskytovalo sucho. E smrku v letech 2019 a 2020 dosahovala 43 %, resp. 39 % z ET. Volba škálovacího období se projevila v nejvlhčím roce 2020, kdy sezónní srážky dosáhly 1098 mm. Sezónní ET tvořila v průměru 50 % E. Všechny odhady E smrkového lesa vykazovaly koeficienty determinace podobné v letech 2017 a 2018, ve srovnání s ET, ale v letech 2019 a 2020 bylo velmi nízké.
