The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth and Development of Jordan

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje úlohu přímých zahraničních investic do ekonomiky Jordánska v posledních letech. Studie rovněž hodnotí některé makroekonomické ukazatele (tj. Míru inflace, dopravu, konkurenceschopnost, otevřenost, infrastrukturu), které pravděpodobně budou v Jordánsku pohánět nebo bránit přílivu zahraničních investic. Podobně byly k dosažení cílů studie použity údaje časových řad získané od některých agentur OSN pro období 1976-2016. Byly použity některé ekonometrické modely. Zjištění ukazují, že zahraniční investice mají pozitivní vztah k hospodářskému růstu v Jordánsku. Výsledky také ukazují, že přímé zahraniční investice mají důsledky pro některé makroekonomické ukazatele v zemi. Je zřejmé, že příliv PZI do země kolísal a drasticky se snížil ve sledovaném období. Velikost těchto investic byla nízká. I když existují nové investiční legislativy, zjištění naznačují, že slabá konkurenceschopnost, nízké vývozy, vysoká inflace, špatný rozvoj infrastruktury mezi omezeními přílivu přímých zahraničních investic a hospodářským růstem a rozvojem v Jordánsku. Existuje naléhavá potřeba zajistit infrastrukturu, vytvořit a zavést řádnou makroekonomickou a sociální politiku s cílem přilákat zahraniční investice do udržitelného růstu a rozvoje, které je třeba v této zemi dosáhnout.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the role of FDI in the economy of Jordan in recent years. The study also assesses some macroeconomic indicators (i.e. inflation rate, transport, competitiveness, openness, infrastructure) that are likely to either drive or impede the inflows of foreign investments in Jordan. Similarly, time series data obtained from some UN agencies for the period 1976-2016 were used to achieve the aims of the study. Some econometric models were used. The findings show that FDI has a positive relationship with economic growth in Jordan. In addition, the results reveal that FDI has implications for some of the macroeconomic indicators in the country. Sadly, the inflows of FDI to the country have fluctuated and drastically reduced within the period under study. The size of these investments has been low. Even though there is new investment legislation, the findings suggest that weak competitiveness, low exports, high inflation, poor infrastructure development among the constraints to the inflows of FDI and economic growth and development in the Jordan. There is an urgent need to provide infrastructure, make and implement sound macroeconomic and social policies to attract foreign investment for a sustainable growth and development to achieve in the country.
