Real men drink?: Masculinity and alcohol consumption.

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je prostřednictvím analýzy rozhovorů o konzumaci alkoholu zjistit zda, a případně jak je alkohol součástí mužské sociální identity. Analyzováno bylo osm rozhovorů s muži ve věkovém rozpětí mezi osmnáctým a šestadvacátým rokem. Tato skupina se dále člení na základě umístění v rámci vzdělanostního spektra. Polovina mužů je tvořena studujícími či absolventy vysoké školy, polovina druhá studujícími či absolventy učňovských oborů. Výzkumné otázky této práce jsou následující: Jak muži vysokoškoláci a učni uvažují o mužské sociální roli? Jak je tato role demonstrována v kontextu konzumace alkoholu jako „typicky“ mužské činnosti? První část práce obsahují teoretická východiska, druhá analýzu rozhovorů, v níž jsou diskutována téma, mezi muži rezonujícími nejčastěji, a to sebekontrola, emoce a rituály v konzumaci alkoholu.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is by analyzing conversations about alcohol use to determine whether, and if so how, alcohol is a part of a male social identity. It analyzed eight interviews with men ranging in age between eighteen and twenty-six years. This group is further divided based on their place within the educational spectrum. Half the men consists of students and graduates from university, second half of students and graduates of apprenticeships. The research questions of this thesis are as follows: “How are male college students and apprentices thinking about male social identity? How is this identity demonstrated in the context of alcohol consumption as a “typically” masculine activity? The first part of this thesis formulates theoretical bases; the second part consists of the analysis of interviews and on its results. That section discusses the topics that were among men debated most often, and that is self-control, emotions and rituals in alcohol consumption.
