Díky rostoucím nárokům na kvalitu či rychlost vývoje nového softwaru je snaha tento vývoj provádět systematicky a efektivně. Touto činností se zabývá softwarové inženýrství, jehož součástí je i návrh datového modelu, který řeší strukturu ukládaných dat.
