Richard Henry Pratt, Ethnocentrism, and the Blindness of the Carlisle Project

Abstract:

This thesis examines the operation of an assimilationist boarding school designated for Native Americans in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and the impact of its actions on indigenous cultures and peoples of Northern America. The aim of the thesis is to provide objective aspects of this issue by using analysis of publications examining the system of Native American education and both testimonies of students who supported such policies and those who opposed them. The first chapter will describe the history of the Carlisle school and how it was operated, completed by the definition of ethnocentrism in the United States. The following chapter will examine the opinions of school's detractors. The last chapter will provide testimonies of students of indigenous origin, who held different opinions, seeing the future of Native American culture in this school and in the U.S. system of Native American education.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá činnost asimilační americké školy pro domorodé Američnay v pennsylvánském městě Carlisle a dopad jejího působení na domorodou kulturu a lid Severní Ameriky. Cílem bakalářské práce je podat objektivní náhled na tuto problematiku za použití analýzy publikací zkoumajících systém vzdělání domorodých Američanů a svědectví studentů, kteří tuto politiku podporovali, tak i jejich odpůrců. První kapitola se bude zabývat historií a denní činností této školy a bude zakončena definicí etnocentrismu ve Spojených státech. Následující kapitola zkoumá názory odpůrců této školy. Poslední kapitola podá svědectví studentů domorodého původu, kteří v této škole a celém tehdejším vzdělávacím systému viděli budoucnost kultury původních obyvatel Severní Ameriky.
