Content versus Visuals in the work of Josef Váchal: A Comparison

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce Komparace obsahových a grafických složek v díle Josefa Váchala si klade za cíl probádat dílo tohoto po dlouhá léta málo známého českého umělce Josefa Váchala. Ve své metodologické části se zaměřuje především na popis a rozbor specifické části jeho díla jak z pohledu grafického a výtvarného, tak z pohledu obsahového a literárního. Tyto dvě složky díla navzájem srovnává metodou komparace. Samostatná analytická část se věnuje rozboru a interpretaci třech stěžejních autorských knih Josefa Váchala (Mystika čichu, Krvavý román, Šumava umírající a romantická) se zaměřením na extrakci grafické i obsahové složky, a jejich následnou syntézu a zhodnocení díla jako celku. Mimoto je součástí studie část faktografická, jež se zabývá životem a inspiracemi ve Váchalově díle, které jsou stěžejní pro celkový kontext tématu. Také objasňuje pojmy s jeho tvorbou spjaté (teozofie, mysticismus, secese, symbolismus, expresionismus). Cílem této studie je zařadit Josefa Váchala jako umělce do kontextu českého umění 20. století, shrnout vlivy, které se v jeho díle projevují a srovnat kvalitu výše zmiňovaných složek jeho díla, grafické a obsahové. Mezi významné teze práce patří pokus zařadit umělce do hnutí výtvarného směru art brut.

Abstract:

The presented thesis named Content versus Visuals in the work of Josef Váchal: A Comparison aims at displaying a generalized view of his work. The author concludes that in Váchal’s work it is quantity that exceeds quality; he was known as a highly prolific woodcarver and painter, yet the quantity with an inconstant quality. On one hand, when considering individual assessment criteria, such as genre, theme, author’s specific narrative approach and form of narrative, we see his work as mediocre, with the exception of his usage of very distinct themes. On the other hand, the visual side of his work, namely usage of letters, illustrations or type, has been assessed as a work of high quality and unique nature. His wood engraving technique is rare and unmistakable in its character. In Váchal’s work the two elements, the content and the visual side, appear to be intertwined. In this work a thorough analysis was done for three books of major importance: Krvavý roman (Bloodstained Romance), Mystika čichu (The Sense of Smell and its Mystery) and Šumava umírající a romantická (Šumava Dying and Romantic). Having done the analysis we have seen that in all the three books, the content/literary aspects and graphic/artistic aspects are equal, however, in terms of quality the latter aspect surpasses the formerly mentioned literary qualities. Despite this, the two elements of Váchal’s work should not be assessed separately, let alone the fact that in his work he followed the 19th century ideas of Gesamtkunstwerk. Based of the findings of this study, Josef Váchal is considered as an artist whose work stands outside the mainstream trends of the Czech Modernism of the 20th century. Neither was he a particular follower of a trend, nor a supporter of artistic manifestos or a creator of his own school. In his work we trace influences of landscape painting, Art Nouveau as well as other Czech Modernist streams and styles. Through the course of time, due to his insufficient artistic schooling, or primitivism, combined with his subconscious urge to continue his work, we can partially regard Josef Váchal as an Art Brut artist.
