Who inspired whom: Durkheim's Suicide

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá Durkheimovou knihou Sebevražda, na jejímž pomezí pátrá po stavu písemné produkce o sebevraždě před Durkheimem s tím, že se soustředí na spisy vydané v 19. století. Skrze tyto texty pak zkoumá jeho původní myšlenkový přínos a hodnotí jeho originalitu. Práce se nejenom věnuje jednotlivým pracím, ale je zakončena teoretickým zhodnocením kritérií klasického díla. Tato část napomáhá lépe porozumět, proč se určité dílo stává klasickým a proč právě Durkheimova Sebevražda získala tuto pozici. Závěr práce informuje, že stav bádání o sebevraždě před Durkheimem byl na vysoké úrovni a zejména publikace badatelů 19. století mu poskytly plnohodnotný teoretický a statistický základ. Durkheim ve své práci využíval těchto poznatků pro budování sociologické teorie, ale opomněl metodologické omezení spojené s tehdejšími empirickými údaji. Účel práce je tak v uvedení sebevražedného povědomí před Durkheimem, ale zároveň ve skutečnosti, že reflexivní přístup klasického díla s důrazem na jeho myšlenkové vlivy může být přínosný pro širší porozumění kontextu. Uplatnění stejné metodologie lze použít na další díla sociologické produkce, což lépe umožní chápat kumulaci paradigmatických poznatků v sociologii.

Abstract:

The paper deals with the Durkheim book Suicide, on which it searches for a written production about suicide before Durkheim, concentrating on writings published in the 19th century. Through these texts, the thesis examines his original intellectual contribution and evaluates his originality. The work is not only devoted to individual works but it is enriched by a theoretical evaluation of the criteria of a classical work as well. This section helps to understand better why a particular piece of work becomes a classic, and why Durkheim's Suicide has acquired this position. The conclusion of the work informs that the state of study of suicide before Durkheim was at a high level and, in particular, the publication of 19th century scholars provided a full-fledged theoretical and statistical fundamentals. Durkheim, in his work, used this knowledge to build his sociological theory, but he omitted the methodological limitations associated with the contemporary empirical data. The purpose of the work is thus to introduce suicidal awareness in the pre-Durkheim period. Also, the reflexive approach of a classical work with an emphasis on its influences can be beneficial to a wider understanding of the context. Applying the same methodology can be employed in other works of the sociological production, which possibly can make it easier to understand the accumulation of paradigmatic knowledge in sociology.
