Politeness Strategies in the Language of Media

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the politeness strategies used in an American talk show by its host, Nancy Grace, and her guests. Its methods are mainly based on the politeness strategies by Penelope Brown and Stephen C. Levinson, and Geoffrey Leech, as well as on the theory of speech acts by John L. Austin. The purpose of the analysis was to identify the politeness strategies used by the host of the show and her guests. The analysis revealed that both positive and negative politeness strategies were used, both by the host and the guests, and there were also polite speech acts used as well as utterances that can be regarded as polite, because they were used according to the Politeness Principle.

Cílem této diplomové práce je analýza zdvořilostních strategií použitých v jedné z amerických talk show moderátorkou a jejími hosty. Použité metody vycházejí z teorií zdvořilosti Penelope Brown a Stephena C. Levinsona, a také Geoffrey Leeche. Dalším teoretickým základem je teorie mluvních aktů Johna L. Austina. Cílem analýzy je popsat, které zdvořilostní strategie byly použity, jak a za jakým účelem. Analýza prokázala, že jak moderátorka, tak hosté používali pozitivní i negativní zdvořilostní strategii. Zdvořilost se projevovala také v některých mluvních aktech a zdvořilých promluvách.
