The Effect of the Ukrainian Crisis on the Country's Economy

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá ukrajinskou krizí, která započala neakceptováním asociační smlouvy s Evropskou unií, následně gradovala protesty na kyjevském Majdanu a vyvrcholila anexí Krymu a válkou v Donbasu. Cílem této práce je odhad vlivu těchto událostí na ekonomiku země pomocí metody Synthetic Control Method, a to pro proměnné HDP na obyvatele a tempo růstu HDP. Na základě výsledků lze odhadovat negativní efekt krize u obou sledovaných proměnných, přičemž konkrétní akumulovaná ztráta je odhadnuta na 7121 dolarů pro HDP na obyvatele, respektive 25,5 p.b. pro tempo růstu HDP v pointervenčním období 2014-2017. Prezentované výsledky byly posléze podrobeny placebo testům, na jejichž základě lze odhady považovat za robustní.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses effect of ukrainian crisis, which began with non-acceptance of the association agreement with the European Union. Then escalated by protests in Kiev's Maidan and culminated in the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbass. The aim of this work is to estimate the impact of the above-mentioned events on the country's economy using the Synthetic Control Method and considering the variables of GDP per capita and growth rate of GDP. Based on the results, the negative effect of the crisis can be estimated for both variables, when the specific accumulated loss is estimated at 7121 USD for GDP per capita, respectively 25.5 pp. for the GDP growth rate within the observed period 2014-2017. Consequently, the placebo tests were used to assess the robustness of the presented results.
