What is the relevance of masculine subjectivities for degrowth transformation?

Abstract:

Stále více vědců a vědkyň tvrdí, že řešení současné polykrize bude vyžadovat selektivní omezení spotřeby v západním světě (např. fosilních paliv, automobilů a masa) a přechod na nerůstovou ekonomiku. V mnoha z těchto odvětví však převažují muži a zároveň jsou spojována s maskulinitou. Tato práce propojuje poznatky z maskulinních studií, nerůstu a ekofeminismu, aby zmapovala význam maskulinních subjektivit pro nerůstovou transformaci. Vychází z teorie hegemonní maskulinity a posuzuje typologii industriálních/chlebodárných, ekomoderních a ekologických maskulinit a dochází k závěru, že ekologické maskulinity jsou s nerůstovými transformacemi nejkompatibilnější. Ekologizace maskulinit však pravděpodobně narazí na odpor, protože ztělesnění principů nerůstu jako je autonomie, dostatek a péče představuje akt deprivilegizace mužů a a ohržení jejich postavení ve společnosti.

Abstract:

There is a growing consensus among scientists that solving the current poly-crises will require a selective reduction of consumption such as fossil fuels, cars, and meat in the Western world and a transformation towards a degrowth economy. However, many of these sectors are predominantly men and are simultaneously associated with masculine identities. This thesis synthesizes the scholarship of masculinities studies, degrowth, and ecofeminism to map the relevance of masculine subjectivities for the degrowth transformations. It builds on the theory of hegemonic masculinity and assesses the typology of industrial/breadwinner, ecomodern, and ecological masculinities and concludes that ecological masculinities are the most compatible with degrowth transformations. However, the ecologisation of masculinities is likely to be resisted as embodying the principles of degrowth of autonomy, sufficiency, and care presents an act of deprivileging of men and would threaten men's status in society.
