Murder Taken out of the Venetian Vase and Dropped into the Alley: Adapting Hard-boiled Masculinity and Femininity

Anotácia:

Dizertačná práca skúma znázornenie mužskosti a ženskosti vykreslenej v detektívnych románoch drsnej americkej školy (Dashiell Hammett – Maltézsky sokol, Raymond Chandler – Hlboký spánok a Zbohom buď, láska moja a Mickey Spillane – Ja, porota) a ich následných filmových adaptáciách a remakoch—The Maltese Falcon a.k.a. Dangerous Female (1931), Satan Met a Lady (1936), The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Falcon Takes Over (1942), Murder, My Sweet (1944), Farewell, My Lovely (1975), The Big Sleep (1946 a 1978) a I, the Jury (1953 a 1982). Práca porovnáva všetky filmy s ich literárnymi predlohami a stanovuje rozdiely medzi nimi nájdené, navyše objasňuje výskyt týchto rozdielov. Ďalej rozvíja argument, že pre ženskú časť obecenstva filmové verzie ponúkajú širokú škálu príjemných a povzbudivých stvárnení napriek tomu, že hlavné ženské postavy na konci filmu podľahnú alebo sa podriadia patriarchálnemu status quo prezentovanému na plátne. Navyše práca vyhlasuje, že filmy v porovnaní so zdrojovými románmi ešte viac negatívne zintenzívnili vzťah muža a ženy, a takým spôsobom uprednostňujú stvárňovanie čisto mužského priateľstva. Z tohto dôvodu ženský náprotivok hlavného mužského hrdinu obvykle na plátne chýba.

Abstract:

This work investigates the representation of masculinity and femininity portrayed in the American hard-boiled detective fiction (Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep and Farewell, My Lovely and Mickey Spillane’s I, the Jury) and in its subsequent film adaptations and remakes—The Maltese Falcon a.k.a. Dangerous Female (1931), Satan Met a Lady (1936), The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Falcon Takes Over (1942), Murder, My Sweet (1944), Farewell, My Lovely (1975), The Big Sleep (1946 and 1978), and I, the Jury (1953 and 1982)—it compares all films with their literary origins and establishes the differences and elucidates their occurrence. The dissertation develops and argument that the film versions offer a range of enjoyable and encouraging interpretations for the female spectator, even if the main female characters, in the end, seem to conform or fall prey to the patriarchal status quo presented on the screen. Moreover, it states that the films, when compared to the source novels, further “intensified” the male/female relationship favoring the male comradeship, thus the female equal to the male hero is frequently discarded from screen.
