The influence of Elizabeth II on the foreign policy of the United Kingdom Of Great Britain And Northern Ireland

Abstract:

V minulosti se již mnoho odborníků zabývalo rolí jedince v mezinárodních vztazích. Rozvoj globalizace a internetu umožnil široké škále jedinců ovlivňovat politiku na mezinárodní úrovni. Většina studií se však zabývá převážně politiky, celebritami, sportovci, či aktivisty. Pozornost by si však zasloužilo i mnoho dalších významných osobností. Tato práce se zaměřuje právě na jednu z nich. Jejím cílem je analyzovat pravomoci a vliv Alžběty II. v rámci zahraniční (unijní) politiky Spojeného království Velké Británie a Severního Irska. Vzhledem k tomu, že se jednalo o panovnici, jež vládla konstituční monarchii, byly její pravomoci silně omezovány ústavou. Tato bakalářská práce je vypracována ve formě explorativní případové studie a jejím cílem je odkrývat zcela nové skutečnosti a na jejich základě analyzovat vliv nejvýznamnějšího symbolu monarchie za poslední dvě staletí - samotné královny. První část této studie se zabývá teorií liberalismu a konceptem jednotlivce jako aktéra mezinárodních vztahů. Ve druhé části se nachází empirická část této práce, která na základě dvou konkrétních případů analyzuje vliv Alžběty II. Prvním případem je dění ve Společnosti národů (Commonwealthu) a druhou je politická krize v roce 2019, která se týkala odchodu Velké Británie z Evropské unie - brexitu. Alžběta II. představovala symbol vtělený do živé osoby, v čemž spočívala její největší síla. Díky své popularitě dokázala ovlivňovat dění na mezinárodní scéně.

Abstract:

Many experts have addressed the role of the individual in international relations. The development of globalization and the internet has enabled a wide range of individuals to influence policy at the international level. Most studies, however, have mainly focused on politicians, celebrities, athletes, or activists. Nevertheless, many other significant figures also deserve attention. This paper focuses on one of them. It aims to analyse the powers and influence of Elizabeth II in the foreign (EU) policy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. As she was a monarch who ruled a constitutional monarchy, her powers were heavily constrained by the constitution. This thesis is written in the form of an exploratory case study and aims to uncover entirely new facts and to use them to analyse the influence of the most important symbol of the monarchy over the last two centuries - the Queen herself. The first part of this study deals with the theory of liberalism and the concept of the individual as an actor in international relations. The second part of this thesis is the empirical part, which analyses the influence of Elizabeth II on the basis of two specific cases. The first case is the developments in the Commonwealth of Nations (Commonwealth) and the second is the political crisis in 2019 concerning the UK's exit from the European Union - Brexit. Elizabeth II represented a symbol embodied in a living person, and therein lay her greatest strength. Thanks to her popularity, she was able to influence events on the international stage.
